Base: Main base St Peter’s Hospital, with requirement to work at any other Trust site as necessary.
An opportunity has arisen to recruit a Antenatal and Newborn (ANNB) Screening & Immunisation Support Midwife to work within Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals maternity services.
The post holder will:
Support the maternity screening leads in the implementation and co-ordination of all key objectives in relation to the Antenatal and Newborn Screening (ANNB) Programmes for Ashford and St Peters Hospitals NHS Trust
Will provide information, support and counselling service for women considering or undergoing prenatal tests.
Support leads in the delivery of local screening policies and embed best practice for screening programmes and services.
Ensure the delivery of high quality, safe, effective and equitable screening programmes that meet the outcomes set out in the Public Health Agenda.
Support continuous quality improvement through the implementation of standards, ongoing data collection and reporting systems and through a programme of monitoring, evaluation and feedback.
Adhere to the quality assurance structures for screening programmes that will ensure compliance with national standards.

Main duties of the job
- Assist in the monitoring and evaluation of standards of care in conjunction with other colleagues
as part of the multiprofessional team, ensuring best practice
- Involvement in monitoring Trust antenatal and newborn screening pathways meet national
standards and that new or updated standards are implemented as they are released by the NSC.
- Work closely with the ANNB screening & Immunisation failsafe officer to confirm that
appropriate failsafe systems are in place within all antenatal and newborn screening pathways.
- Ensure all screen positive antenatal screening results are identified and to act on them
appropriately and escalate if necessary
- Provide information, support and counseling to women, where required, to enable them to
make informed decisions regarding further testing and/or the management of their pregnancy.
To assist in the day to day running of the screening service.
- Work closely with the screening team to ensure “failsafe” of the programmes is maintained.
- Counsel women regarding their choices following a high risk result, referring women for further
testing, dealing with results and referrals for termination of pregnancy.
- Support and actively participate in the delivery of the maternity immunisation programme

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The postholder will:
• Provide information and results to women and their families in each of the antenatal and
newborn screening programmes:
Sickle cell and Thalassaemia programme
Fetal Anomaly programme
Infectious diseases in Pregnancy programme
Newborn and Infant physical examination programme
Newborn Bloodspot programme
• Support women when making difficult decisions following screening test results
• Support the ANNB screening coordinator in the collation and production of the National KPI data
• Support the ANNB screening coordinator with the training and education of colleagues
• Support the delivery of the maternity immunisation programme
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Current Registration as a registered Midwife
- Mentorship / Practice Supervisor Practice Assessor trained
Desirable criteria
- Counselling qualification
- Genetics / haemoglobinopathy counselling qualification
- Screening module
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in ANNB screening
- Formal and informal teaching practice in the classroom
Desirable criteria
- Leadership qualifications and or experience
- Breaking Bad News / manging sensitive situations
