Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced  and motivated nurse to join the breast cancer nursing team at Ashford Hospital. The post holder will play a key role in delivering high-quality, evidenced based care to patients diagnosed with breast cancer, with a particular focus on supporting the breast PSFU pathway and delivering nurse-led oncology clinics working along side the wider oncology team.

Working as part of the team the successful candidate will provide specialist clinical expertise, information & psychological support to patients, families and carers. Being the key-worker for patients you will ensure, timely assessment, intervention and coordination of care.

This is an opportunity for a nurse with relevant experience in breast cancer nursing to further develop their skills and knowledge, training and support will be provided. There will be opportunities for ongoing educational development..

The breast cancer nursing team are based at Ashford Hospital, there is a need for cross site working at St Peter's supporting those patient requiring acute admission.

Main duties of the job

  • To promote high standards of specialist care for patients with a diagnosis of breast cancer, ensuring a quality experience.
  • To provide specialist support and care to patients admitted with complications of their cancer treatment.
  • To work autonomously to support patients with breast cancer facilitating necessary investigations and providing clinical engagement and support for patients receiving SACT.
  • As part of PSFU deliver HNA, treatment summary and discharge clinics.
  • To be a resource both within the trust and the community for clinical advice and information.
  • With the Lead  Nurse contribute to clinical governance within the trust for cancer patients.
  • To deliver care in line with National and Alliance guidance and requirements

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To support the breast PFSU pathway, ensuring safe and effective follow up
  • Deliver nurse-led oncology clinics along side the wider oncology team, clinics to include pre chemotherapy assessments, review of on treat patients, complications of hormone therapy.
  • Work autonomously within the MDT to support decision making.
  • Support consultants with the delivery of a new diagnosis
  • Discuss investigations and treatment for cancer with sensitivity, knowledge and expertise.
  • Deliver clinical care and management in line with local and national guidance and best practice
  • Contribute to service development with audit and quality improvement initiatives

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • First level degree in related subject or equivalent knowledge, skills and competency gained through clinical experience working at a senior level
  • • Post-basic qualification in breast cancer management or relevant experience in breast cancer nursing.
  • • SACT certification
  • NMC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • • Advanced communications skills training
  • Level 2 Psychological Training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Relevant post registration experience at Band 6 or above, in breast cancer nursing.
  • • Evidence of advanced communications skills
  • • Knowledge and experience of PSFU models and digital follow up systems
  • Experience in running nurse-led oncology clinics
Desirable criteria
  • • Previous Band 7 experience

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • • Advanced knowledge of breast cancer treatment and management
  • • Knowledge of cancer performance and standards
Desirable criteria
  • • Awareness of annual Cancer Patient Satisfaction Survey

Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Strong communication, leadership, and organisation skills
  • • Evidence of advanced clinical assessment skills and autonomous practice
