Working as a Senior Healthcare Support Worker in the Cardiac Unit, Within the hospital setting, you will be carrying out assigned tasks involving direct patient care, whilst maintaining privacy and dignity of each patient. This will be whilst demonstrating excellent care, compassion and communication, and in support of and supervised by a Registered Nurse/Midwife or Nursing Associate.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Admitting patients and preparing patients for procedures.
  • Discharging patients once competent. 
  • Moving & Handling of patients to support independence.
  • Infection Prevention and Control.
  • Safeguarding of adults and children.
  • Reporting Incidents.
  • Assisting in Pre-Assessment Clinics.
  • Undertaking blood and swabs clinics. 
  • Taking and recording vital signs or other parameters such as height/weight, capillary blood glucose/ketones collection and sampling and urine sample collection and sampling.
  • Cannulating or blood collection, cannula removal, taking specimens/samples of any kind, simple dressings.
  • ECGs or setting up cardiac monitoring.
  • Supporting circulator nurse during procedures in Cardiac Catheter laboratories.
  • TR band management.
  • Stock control. 
  • Recovery of patients post conscious sedation.
  • Hydration and Nutrition assistance.
  • Assistance with comfort and hygiene care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The post holder is required to comply with the organisations standing order and standing financial instructions and at all times, deal honestly with the organisation, colleagues and all those who have dealing with the organisation including patients, relative and suppliers.

  • The post holder supports the organisation to act safely and responsibly in relation to patients and staff, and the communities in which they work. Ensure that the law in key areas such as health and safety, employment, and finance is complied with. Work within specific regulations such as governance arrangements and ethical frameworks for the NHS.
  • Monitor quality of own work to ensure that the required standards of performance are met.
  • To support the department and organisation by carrying out any other duties that reasonably fit within the broad scope of a job of this  grade and type of work.
  • To be familiar with and comply with all Trust and departmental policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines.

Person specification

Required Skills

Essential criteria
  • Level 2 or equivalent English and Maths
  • Recognised level 3 qualification
  • 6-12 months experience as a Healthcare Support Worker in the NHS
  • Understanding of the role of the Healthcare Support Worker in the hospital setting.
  • Effective communication and IT skills
  • Care Certificate achieved through the NHS
  • Previous experience in similar setting
  • Undertake ECG on patients skills
Desirable criteria
  • Venepuncture and canullation skills
  • TR band Management
  • Ability to function in acute and emergent care situations
  • Good delegation and escalation skills
  • Supervision skills of junior staff

  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively as a member of a team and are aware of own limitations.
  • Functional English and Maths skills
