Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Divisional Medical Director (DMD) and professionally to the Chief of Nursing and Midwifery, the Director of Midwifery (DOM) will along with the DDN, be responsible for providing high level operational and strategic leadership for the Maternity services and is accountable for the delivery of clinical quality standards, patient safety and the overall maternity patient experience in the Division. The key focus of this role is to continuously drive the very best outcomes for women, people and their babies, ensuring the care delivered is safe, personalised, and striving for excellence. The DoM is responsible for providing professional leadership, direction, advice, and support for the Division to ensure there is consistency of practice and high standards of care with a strong patient safety focus.

You will provide leadership and direction for the Trust and Division ensuring that it supports the Trust’s strategic vision for highly satisfied patients, engaged people, modern infrastructure, and excellent quality. 

You will be responsible for the leadership, line management and professional standards of the Maternity workforce and accountable for ensuring high professional and maternity care standards throughout the Division, Trust and, where appropriate, the wider health and social care system.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Master’s degree in midwifery, leadership, management, or relevant subject or equivalent (or able to demonstrate equivalent level of experience)
  • Current NMC registration – registered midwife
  • Management qualification of equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuing personal development
  • Post registration qualification relevant to role
Desirable criteria
  • Service / quality improvement qualification / experience

Experince

Essential criteria
  • A track record of successful healthcare and maternity management.
  • Substantial clinical management and clinical leadership experience within a healthcare setting, the majority at senior level.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering change and performance with and through others.
  • Budget management including a number of departmental budgets, budgets of several million pounds, cost savings programmes/income generation and service line costing
  • Experience of transformation programmes and delivery of service improvement programmes.
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical experience, experience of working with managed clinical networks.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed change leaders able to effectively influence through motivating and energising others in the organisation for the best possible patient results and organisational processes.
  • Extensive knowledge of clinical governance, risk management and associated control mechanisms.
  • Detailed knowledge of priorities for Midwifery care to enhance care outcomes and staff wellbeing. • A significant understanding of the NHS operating
  • A significant understanding of the NHS operating Framework, Governance, Service provision, patient flow and resource management
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of key national policy issues within services
