Job overview

This post is a one-year Fellowship designed to provide skills and competencies above and beyond what is currently required to obtain a CCT in the relevant surgical specialty.

The position affords excellent training opportunities in the whole spectrum of Spinal Surgery. The post has 4 Consultant Spinal Surgeon Trainers at Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 

Those eligible to apply for this post will have full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a National Training Number in England, or foreign equivalent, in orthopaedics or neurosurgery at the time of the closing date for applications. Doctors appointed will relinquish their NTN and their “period of grace” and will not be able to reclaim either on completion of the fellowship. Demonstration of a commitment to training in Trauma and Spinal Surgery, good communication and team working skills are essential. Other experience in the form of audit or research is desirable.

Main duties of the job

-To gain experience in the management of elective and emergency orthopaedic spinal cases. This includes both adult and paediatric pathology.

-To develop skills in all aspects of modern spinal surgery (excluding scoliosis surgery); Cervical, thoracic and lumbar surgery, anterior and posterior approaches, open and minimal access techniques.

-To develop knowledge, leadership qualities, attitudes and communication skills relating to the multidisciplinary management of spinal conditions.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The position affords excellent training opportunities in the whole spectrum of Spinal Surgery.

The timetable has been prepared to ensure maximum exposure to Outpatient and Operating Theatre Sessions.

There is ample scope for research.

In addition, the Fellow will attend dedicated radiology meetings, multidisciplinary spinal grand rounds and the departmental education and audit programs.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB, BS or equivalent
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS (ortho)
  • Distinctions, Scholarships, prizes
  • Other degrees e.g. BSc, Masters, PhD (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 5 years orthopaedic experience at registrar level
  • Demonstrates experience of teaching and training ST1/2s and F1s
  • Competent in basic procedures e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking, etc
  • Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help
Desirable criteria
  • Has participated in clinical audit
  • Previous Research experience
  • Ability to apply research to clinical problems
