Job overview

As a key member of the multiple sclerosis team within Frimley Health Foundation Trust, you will work directly with the neurology Consultants, MS Consultant Nurse, MS Nurses and MS co-ordinator.

You will also be part of the wider neurology team within the integrated care system covering Frimley Park, Heatherwood Hospital and Wexham Park.  

This role is based at Frimley Park however you will be expected to travel to different sites as required and carry out home visits

Safe delivery of MS therapies and management of multiple sclerosis patients across the whole disease trajectory from diagnosis to end of life.

Facilitating treatment pathways of emerging/established NICE approved MS therapeutics and also the care and support of all FHFT MS patients to include any task that benefits the neurology MS clinical service.

Providing home visits to patients who are unable to attend clinic appointments. 

You will be involved in the wider MDT discussions/meeting and actively participate and on occasions lead these regarding the care of people with MS.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To participate in the provision of information/services to patients and their careers, regarding their disease, treatments and services available.
  • To promote independence and self-management of MS.
  • To support members of the multi-disciplinary team in the care of patients with MS.
  • Liaise with all relevant professionals and non-professionals in the planning of OPD clinics.
  • To attend and participate in MDT and other relevant meetings when required.
  • To administer disease modifying therapies safely, providing information about side effects to treatments, ensuring patient information is up to date and relevant.
  • To advise on other treatments as required such as symptom management therapies and provide advice and information on the management of these to patients, carers, district nurses, G.Ps and medical/nursing staff within the Trust.
  • To provide knowledge and advice in the management of physiological and psychological symptoms.
  • To interpret blood test results and act accordingly with regards to treatment.
  • To interpret clinical signs and symptoms and to monitor effect of treatment.
  • To participate and actively engage in the MDT process across the wider organisation.
  • To assess patients in their home environment and recognise the need for onward referrals to physio, OT, adult social care, safeguarding etc.
  • To co-ordinate investigations, treatments and arrangements for patients receiving therapies in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
  • To assist in the day to day running of the MS nursing service.
  • Seek support from colleagues when challenging situations arise.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • First level registration
  • Specialist qualification or willingness to undertake further study for appropriate course (MS Development Module, Birmingham University).
Desirable criteria
  • Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist (MSCS).
  • Mental health experience.
  • MS Development module

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Some MS experience, the willingness to learn and undertake further education as appropriate.
  • Experienced MS Specialist Nurse with completion of MS Development Module.
  • Experience with running clinics, extensive knowledge of disease modifying therapy and the safe monitoring of these drugs.
  • Experience in research, audit and databases
Desirable criteria
  • Non – medical prescriber.
  • Skilled in phlebotomy and cannulation.
  • Neurological examination experience.

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates effective communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.
  • Competent in IT skills.
  • Ability to cope with responsibility, pressure and distressing or emotional situations. • Motivated self-starter.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with other healthcare professionals.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate involvement in recent research.
  • Management skills.
  • Cannulation and phlebotomy skills.

  • Full driving licence essential with access to a car.
  • Flexibility to work across site – Wexham, Heatherwood and Frimley Park Hospital and visit patients in their home.
