Matron – Gynaecology Services

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Matron to lead gynaecology services across elective and emergency pathways. You will have site responsibility at Frimley Park or Wexham Park and share oversight of Heatherwood Hospital.

  • Manage resources effectively within budget

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide visible, accessible leadership across all gynaecology services and act as a role model for nursing practice.
  • Lead the development of specialist gynaecology nursing services, including Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy, Urogynaecology, Fertility, and Endometriosis.
  • Ensure compliance with NMC standards, NICE and RCOG guidance, and maintain high-quality, evidence-based care.
  • Monitor and improve clinical and non-clinical performance, ensuring cleanliness and infection control standards.
  • Manage budgets, resources, and workforce planning, including rotas and skill mix.
  • Oversee staff appraisal, development, and training in line with Trust policies.
  • Lead on clinical governance, risk management, and investigations of incidents and complaints.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Professional & Clinical Leadership

  • Provide visible, accessible leadership across all gynaecology services.
  • Act as a role model for nursing practice and promote continuous professional development.
  • Lead the development of specialist gynaecology nursing services (Colposcopy, Hysteroscopy, Urogynaecology, Fertility, Endometriosis).
  • Ensure compliance with NMC standards and support revalidation.
  • Manage budgets, resources, and workforce planning, including rotas and skill mix.
  • Participate in strategic planning and delivery of departmental objectives.

Quality & Standards

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness and infection control.
  • Monitor clinical and non-clinical performance and implement improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with NICE, RCOG, CQC, and Cervical Screening QA standards.
  • Lead benchmarking and quality improvement projects.

Communication

  • Establish effective communication channels within the Trust and with external partners (GPs, social services).
  • Promote parity of services across all sites and strengthen team relationships.
  • Be visible and approachable for staff, patients, and families.

Clinical Governance & Risk Management

  • Lead risk assessments, incident reviews, and investigations of serious incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with governance frameworks and maintain business continuity plans.
  • Investigate complaints and report findings in line with Trust policy.

Promote Nursing Profession

  • Act as an advocate for nursing, challenge outdated practices, and encourage innovation.
  • Support recruitment and retention by creating a positive image of nursing.

Personnel

  • Recruit, train, and appraise staff in line with Trust policies.
  • Set objectives and support staff development through training and education.

Education & Development

  • Identify training needs and support staff education and research.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based protocols and guidelines.

Main Duties

  • Provide professional leadership and visible presence across all sites.
  • Drive service development and innovation in gynaecology nursing.
  • Ensure safe, effective, and patient-centred care.
  • Manage financial and operational performance within budget.
  • Lead on clinical governance, risk management, and compliance.
  • Foster collaboration with medical teams and external stakeholders.
  • Promote nursing as a profession and support workforce development.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NMC registered
  • First degree in relevant subject
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree

Leadership

Essential criteria
  • 2 years senior clinical experience in gynaecology as band 7 or above
  • Evidence of leadership as band 7 or above
  • Evidence of budget management
  • Evidence of operational management including staff
  • Evidence of change management
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing difficult situation
  • Experience of HR hearings
