Exciting Opportunity – SAS Doctor in Perinatal Psychiatry

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Specialty  doctor to join the Surrey Perinatal Psychiatry Service on a substantive basis.

The Surrey Perinatal Mental Health Service provides specialist, multidisciplinary community care for the assessment and treatment of women experiencing psychosis and other severe mental illnesses during pregnancy and the postnatal period, serving families across the county of Surrey.

The successful post-holder will work as part of a supportive and experienced team, covering part of the South-West arm of the service, in close collaboration with the  Perinatal Consultant Psychiatrist. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop specialist expertise in perinatal psychiatry and contribute meaningfully to improving outcomes for women and their families.

Main duties of the job

The duties of the post would include providing high quality medical care with support from consultant perinatal psychiatrists across the Perinatal Service & maintaining the high level of expertise & skill necessary for the provision of excellent quality perinatal mental health care, aiming for optimal outcomes for mother, infant & the wider family.

Supporting the Perinatal Consultant Psychiatrists in providing clinical supervision to junior doctors that are working or training in the service & offering clinical advice and information as and when required to all staff.

You would be expected to able to communicate with midwives, general practitioners & health professionals effectively. Therefore, good verbal & written communication skills are necessary for the post. 

Participate in service evaluation & the planning of future service developments & ensure that cover is arranged for responsibilities during leave with consultant colleagues within the service & cross cover with other perinatal doctors.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Training or experience working in psychiatry
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Recognised basic Medical Degree
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Section 12 Approval
  • Training or experience in Perinatal Psychiatry and liaison psychiatry

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of assessing and treating patients in community settings
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement.
  • Knowledge and evidence of participation in CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstration of an interest in perinatal and/or liaison psychiatry
  • Experience in brief psychological therapies e.g. CBT, CAT

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to provide a supporting leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high quality care and staff morale
  • Ability to manage own time, workload and prioritise patient care.
  • Ability to appraise own performance as a specialty doctor including own communication methods
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of specific achievements that demonstrate leadership skills
