The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic midwife to join our innovative and award winning maternity service.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 7 position to provide leadership to ensure effective management of the daily activity and flow through the entire maternity service to deliver high standards of care, support with safe delivery of care, reduction in length of stay and high levels of client satisfaction.
This post holder will need to be highly organised with an ability to make complex decisions and manage constantly shifting demands typical of a busy maternity service. This will include reviewing capacity, activity and staffing and working in collaboration with the Clinical Unit Coordinator to prioritise work effectively and efficiently optimise patient flow.
The maternity department at the Royal Surrey is highly successful; it is rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, has achieved Gold Accreditation under the Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative and has achieved all 10 safety actions as a part of NHS Resolution’s CNST scheme. The maternity department prides itself on the high quality care it provides to women and families; this is achieved by focusing on innovation, quality improvement and staff health and wellbeing.
Main duties of the job
Provide leadership to midwifery and non-midwifery staff, ensuring effective management of the daily activity and throughput within the maternity service, including the maternity unit, community hubs and Antenatal Clinic. This will result in high standards of safe midwifery care, reduction in length of stay and an ability to be responsive to individualised needs, thus increasing client satisfaction.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder to access expert clinical advice and they will provide a visible and accessible authoritative presence in clinical areas.
On a daily basis the post holder will be proactive in reviewing the capacity, activity and staffing levels within the unit and redeploying staff across the service to meet requirements and maintain patient safety. There will be an expectation to lead daily safety huddles to identify issues and prioritise work effectively and efficiently to optimise patient flow. This will include supporting the midwives in effective and efficient flow of patients through the service. The post holder will also be a source of expert midwifery advice for staff, lead MDT safety huddles and will be able to provide break relief/cover for the band 7 Unit Coordinator as required.

Essential criteria
- RM and eligible to practice
- Working at Degree Level
- Mentorship in Practice
- Evidence of further study and development of professional and academic skills
Desirable criteria
- Leadership/Management Qualification
- Previous Band 7 Labour Ward Coordinator Experience
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience as a senior Band 6 Midwife. (2years)
- Leadership experience
- Sound knowledge of recent Government/Professional documents/CQC and CNST with awareness of implications to service provision
