The Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an experienced, enthusiastic midwife to join our dynamic midwifery practice development team. The practice development midwife team work in close collaboration with the clinical governance midwife, maternity matrons and the wider obstetric, anaesthetic and neonatal training leads to deliver effective and creative training and practice development programmes to the full maternity team.

While working in all areas of maternity practice development, your work will focus on supporting all student midwives through their training liaising with key stakeholders at the relevant universities. You will take an active role in delivering the maternity training programme as well as supporting your CPD colleagues in the induction, orientation and ongoing training of newly qualified midwives.

You will be a highly skilled and compassionate midwife, competent and confident in teaching including perineal suturing, neonatal resuscitation and the first-line management of obstetric emergencies.

 

Main duties of the job

The Practice Development Midwife will provide evidence-based advice, and support to all maternity staff. The focus of this post is to support student midwives through their training programme ensuring they are provided with the training opportunities to achieve the competencies and objectives required.  Close stakeholder involvement with the relevant universities will facilitate robust oversight of each student. The practice development midwife will be responsible for teaching, managing in situ skills drills and managing multi-professional training in the department, including PROMPT. 

The post holder will work closely with the other members of the practice development team to manage in situ skills drills and managing multi-professional training in the department. The post holder will also support practice assessors and practice supervisors and midwives undertaking post registration courses.  The post holder will also work with the practice development team in the development of midwifery practice and enhance the overall quality of patient care.  It is expected that the post holder will work clinically, supporting students and staff as a requirement of the role.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Practicing / NMC Registered midwife with significant experience and evidence of post-registration education bringing knowledge and skills to degree level
  • Evidence of education to degree level
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching and assessing/mentor preparation qualification
  • Evidence of other professional managerial qualifications
  • Qualifications demonstrating training in advanced skills, for example: Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics qualification or Neonatal Life Support

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial post qualification experience across all areas of midwifery practice with evidence of teaching real time skills in the clinical work place
  • Evidence of teaching and assessing experience/ proven ability to communicate within the MDT
  • Evidence of presentation skills to an audience
  • Demonstrate participation in clinical audit and research
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of managing a budget
