Are you looking to join a dynamic, forward thinking department and apply your skills to a clinical setting? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exercise specialist to join PRIME Cancer Prehabilitation Service. 

This post is suitable for qualified exercise instructors who have an interest in delivering cancer rehabilitation. Previous NHS experience is desirable but not essential. Can Rehab qualification would also be desirable but not essential.

The successful candidate will be based with our PRIME team working within the hospital. This role will comprise of running classes for patients and conducting 1:1 assessments, as well as assisting the team with administration tasks as they arise. 

Training and support will be provided to help you develop the relevant skills.

Main duties of the job

To provide exercise prescription and delivery within the PRIME Prehabilitation Service, as part of the multidisciplinary team without direct supervision, according to team/department standards and protocols.

To maintain a high standard of exercise prescription for patients with a cancer diagnosis, undergoing cancer treatment.

Responsible for effective communication with multi- professional team members/line manager.


Report to supervisor any patient problems, issues regarding clinical management of patients.


Communicate effectively, sensitively and appropriately with patients (and their carers) who may have a variety of medical, psychological and social needs re Physiotherapy input including those with impaired cognitive function i.e. stroke, deaf patients.


This information may be sensitive or complex as may involve discussion regarding long term health and lifestyle changes. Tact and Diplomacy will be required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assist with the delivery of the exercise training component of PRIME prehabilitation and act as a resource to the team in home based exercise prescription.              

To undertake fitness assessments in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team for patients referred to the PRIME prehabilitation service.

To design and implement appropriate, individualised exercise programmes for patients with or without co-morbidities.

Monitor patients during exercise, ongoing evaluation of a patient’s condition adapting treatment and exercise levels as necessary. 

To be responsible for ensuring a safe exercise environment, monitoring the repair and maintenance of equipment used at rehabilitation classes and reporting faulty equipment as per protocol.

To demonstrate the use of equipment to patient groups.

To establish good relationships with patients, carers and staff, promoting a life-long model of self-care and appropriate activity to maintain good health.

To provide educational sessions, in relation to exercise and activity, promoting healthy lifestyles utilising a variety of media and presentation styles.

To provide educational support and training to improve general awareness of the benefits of exercise and rehabilitation. Give advice, information and education about appropriate exercise both to those with newly diagnosed and long standing conditions. 

Responsible for own time management and prioritisation of patient caseload. Plans patient rehabilitation to meet service criteria and patient preference.

Escalate any issues with patients or if a patient fails to progress to line manager.

To be involved in direct patient contact, giving advice, information and education about appropriate exercise.

Document in relevant department and Trust Healthcare Records.

Participate in developing and updating unit guidelines.

Provide the Team Leader with monthly statistics and contribute to reports as per department guidelines.

Attend all mandatory training.

 Attend relevant in service training at a department and unit level.

Maintain own continuous professional development portfolio.

To work according to the relevant Professional Code of Conduct and relevant professional guidelines.

Be aware of, and contribute to the teams overall annual plan.

Contribute to team planning regarding service developments.

Follows department policies, may comment and suggest changes within own clinical area.

To participate in clinical audit.

 

 

Person specification

Qualifiations

Essential criteria
  • Level 3 Fitness Instructor or Exercise Referral Instructor (equivalent to NVQ3).
  • Member of Register of Exercise Professionals.
Desirable criteria
  • Level 4 Cancer Rehabilitation Qualification (Can Rehab)
  • Level 4 Specialist Instructor Qualification in Cardiac Rehab (equivalent to HNC).
  • REPs Level 4 Certificate for Chronic Respiratory Disease.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of leading and delivering group exercise sessions.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within the NHS.
  • Experience of providing training and mentoring to junior / new colleagues.
  • Knowledge and experience of exercise prescription to people with long term conditions.
  • Knowledge and experience of assessing levels of cardiovascular fitness (functional capacity testing- walking or cycle tests).
  • Knowledge of hospital systems i.e. Cerner
  • Knowledge of GP referral for exercise schemes.
