Job overview

A new Breast Clinical Nurse Specialist job opportunity has arisen within our Breast CNS Team. We are looking for Nurse with special interest in Breast Cancer Care. 
Our role is to provide a holistic patient centred support to our patients (and their relatives) during their diagnosis and throughout their breast cancer treatment and their follow up care. Acting as Key Workers, within the Multidisciplinary Team, we are responsible for coordinating individual patients’ care. We also provide Nurse Led services such as Family History, BRCA Carrier Service, Treatment Induced Symptoms, End of Active Treatment Review, Prosthetic Fitting and Oncoplastic Wound Clinics. 
We are seeking to appoint a Registered Nurse, who has the essential experience, motivation, and communication skills. At least two years’ experience nursing cancer patients in a Surgical, Oncology, Research or similar area would be required. Experienced Clinical Nurse Specialists for other tumour sites, who can bring transferable skills, are also encouraged to apply. The candidates should ideally have a Degree or be working towards one in a relevant field. 
Our team (of 7) is well motivated and established in a dynamic and supportive MDT, who see over 350 new cases each year There are five breast Surgeons, and we offer a range of reconstructive surgery. 

Main duties of the job

To manage a workload of patients diagnosed with breast cancer, providing support, information and coordinating their care. To provide Nurse Led services such as Family History, BRCA Carrier Service, Treatment Induced Symptoms, End of Treatment, Prosthetic Fitting, Oncoplastic Wound Management and Patient Initiated Follow Up.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a holistic, patient - focused service, delivering evidence based information and advice to patients with primary breast cancer, supporting them and their families throughout diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care. 

To work as a core member of the multidisciplinary team providing expert advice and education.

To act as 'key worker' within the multidisciplinary team, taking a central role coordinating individual patients care; promoting continuity through the treatment modalities, and to provide patients with a primary point of contact for information and advice.

 

3.    KEY RESULT AREAS/MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•    Provide evidence based clinical care, advice and support to breast patients, their families and carers.

•    Offer nurse-led specialist clinics to patients referred by GPs, other specialities or within the breast team. These clinics include Family History Assessment, BRCA Carrier Service, End of Treatment Holistic Assessment, Complex wound management; Treatment induced symptoms management, Prosthetic Fitting and Patient Initiated Follow Up Service.

•    Advanced nursing assessment skills are required as well as autonomous assessment, decision making, in care planning and delivering treatments appropriately.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered general nurse.
  • First level degree or working towards it.
Desirable criteria
  • Breast Care Nursing Course (or equivalent experience).
  • Advanced communication course (or willing to undertake).

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of breast disease and management
  • Significant experience working with patients with Breast Cancer – in either a surgical, oncology or research setting.
  • CPD - Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of mentoring – nursing students and junior medical staff.
