Specialist Smoking Cessation Maternity Support Worker

Job overview

The Specialist Smoking Cessation Maternity Support Worker (MSW) will primarily work alongside the Midwives and the smoking cessation team at the Royal Surrey to provide personalised smoking cessation support for pregnant women who smoke. 

The MSW will provide smoking cessation support using the support of interventions such as CO monitoring and nicotine replacement therapies for women throughout pregnancy and the postnatal period and support the facilitation of an innovative financial incentive scheme. They will work closely with the Fetal Wellbeing Midwife to undertake the smoke free pregnancy incentive scheme with those women and significant others who meet the schedule of milestones. They will give personalised support, keep accurate records of the women’s CO monitoring, evidencing the woman’s compliance in the incentive scheme.  

Support for women will be provided across a variety of settings including the patient’s home, maternity hub or in the hospital.

Main duties of the job

The Specialist Smoking Cessation Maternity Support Worker will

 

·         Provide personalised care and support to pregnant women who smoke.

·         Provide information about smoking cessation support.

·         Have the knowledge to support the use of nicotine replacement therapy.

·         Undertake regular CO monitoring

·         Document care and results in the patients Badgernet record

·         Maintain records related to the financial incentive scheme

·         Support the Fetal Wellbeing Midwife to develop staff information and training regarding the financial incentive scheme.

·         Maintain the dignity of patients and relatives at all times, respecting their individual needs and wishes.

·         Escalate concerns immediately to the patient’s midwife or appropriate health professional.

·         Be aware of the Trust guidance and policies on all aspects of Health and Safety including Infection control and COSHH (care of substances hazardous to health).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         The Specialist Smoking Cessation Maternity Support Worker will prioritise the workload

·         They will work collaboratively with the Fetal Wellbeing Midwife.

·         Communicating effectively and professionally with women on the telephone or face to face including completion of appropriate documentation recording the conversations and escalation to midwifery staff as needed.

·         Carry out CO Monitoring after appropriate training.

 

·         After appropriate training provide health education to women and midwives in relation to smoking cessation.

·         Support the Fetal wellbeing Midwife in collecting data for ongoing audits in relation to the smoking cessation financial incentive scheme.

·         After appropriate training, take responsibility for :

·         Daily checking of equipment used to monitor CO levels.

·         Ensure that equipment checking records are signed and dated daily.

·         Promote the wellbeing and safety of women whilst following the Trust guidelines for Safeguarding Adults and escalate concerns for safety and wellbeing of vulnerable women through the prescribed channels of communication.

·         Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing personal development through the annual appraisal process.

·         The Specialist Smoking Cessation Maternity Support Worker is not allowed to participate in any technical aspects of midwifery /nursing care which are not defined in this job description, or those for which they have not been trained.

Essential criteria
  • Previous Experience in a Maternity environment
  • Demonstratable experience of working in a healthcare setting

  • Experience in undertaking phlebotomy
  • Experience in undertaking ECGs
