Senior Urological Fellow in Robotic Pelvic Oncology

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen to join the Urology Department at Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust for a 12-month senior fellowship in robotic pelvic cancer surgery in a  leading UK high -volume centre in pelvis cancer surgery.

Designed for a post-CCT urology trainee or junior consultant, the program provides structured, multi-consultant training in robot-assisted radical prostatectomy and robot-assisted radical cystectomy.  Applicants should be have the availability to assess and manage common acute and elective urological conditions safely. Clear commitment to pelvic cancer surgery, robotic surgery, teamwork and reflective learning; and Evidence of audit, quality improvement, research or teaching activity.

Royal Surrey is the UK's highest-volume single-site centre for robotic prostatectomy, one of the world's highest-volume centres for Retzius-sparing robotic prostatectomy and established cystectomy program with one of the shortest postoperative hospital stay in the UK. The unit performs approximately 600 robotic prostatectomies and 120 robotic cystectomies each year.

Main duties of the job

What the pelvic cancer surgery  fellowship offers.

•Dedicated robotic pelvic cancer training, with protected time for robotic theatre sessions (5 sessions), pelvic oncology clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, simulation, research, audit and outcomes work.

•Structured progression from bedside assisting and dual-console training to modular console operating and, when competence is demonstrated, supervised whole procedures.

•Experience across the complete prostatectomy and cystectomy pathways, from patient selection and multidisciplinary discussion to surgery, postoperative care and follow-up.

•Training in Retzius-sparing prostatectomy, robotic radical cystectomy, day-case surgery, patient-led catheter removal, Histolog assessment and high-intensity theatre working.

•A defined fellowship portfolio, including an operative logbook, workplace-based assessments, regular progress reviews, and academic or quality-improvement objectives.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The fellow will contribute to a limited amount of general urology clinic activity (no more than 2 sessions a week). Fellows will also be involved in middle-grade on call and SpR of the week duties, both 1:7.

Supervision and progression 

The fellow will have a named educational supervisor and fellowship director will overview the progression. Console progression will be competency-based and determined by previous experience, patient safety, case complexity and trainer assessment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise
  • MRCS or equivalent postgraduate surgical qualification
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS (Urol), FEBU or equivalent

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Urology training at senior registrar level or equivalent, normally ST7 or above
  • Ability to assess and manage common acute and elective urological conditions safely
  • Evidence of a sustained interest in urological oncology
  • Evidence of audit, quality improvement or research participation
  • Commitment to teaching, feedback and multidisciplinary learning
Desirable criteria
  • CCT or equivalent specialist accreditation
  • Previous robotic or advanced laparoscopic pelvic surgery exposure
  • Prior bedside, dual-console or modular robotic training
  • Peer-reviewed publications, presentations or a higher research degree
  • Formal teaching qualification or faculty experience
