This is a post for either a full-time or part-time Consultant Psychiatrist who will be responsible for providing clinical input and leadership to a proportion of the inpatients in Juniper Ward Farnham Road Hospital as part of the Acute Care Pathway. There are other opportunities to take on additional responsibilities with remuneration. The consultant Psychiatrist is responsible for providing clinical input and leadership and working alongside a multidisciplinary team in line with New Ways of Working.

Main duties of the job

  • It is expected that the post holder will work closely with the home treatment and community teams to ensure effective and efficient pathways and care for patients. This provides a service consistent with models initially recommended in the National Service Framework. The home treatment team ‘gate keeps’ admissions to the inpatient units.
  • The post holder will also provide Consultant Psychiatrist input and Responsible clinicians cover the 10 beds of the 18 bedded Juniper Ward, mainly serving the population aligned to the wards. In addition, another 0.6 whole-time equivalent substantive consultant psychiatrist on the ward is responsible for 8 beds.
  • It is expected that the post holder will work in partnership with the other consultant. In addition, the post holder will work closely with the multi-disciplinary staff on the ward, including trainee doctors.
  • The post-holder will deliver consultant psychiatric input to inpatients admitted to the ward per the agreed Acute Service Operational Policy.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent recognised medical qualification
  • Full medical registration with a license to practice.
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree, e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • • Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC concerning warnings and conditions on practice
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within three months of appointment

Transport

Essential criteria
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving license OR provides evidence of proposed alternative
  • Access to a vehicle for work purposes
  • Transport to travel between locations and ability to fulfil all duties of the post, including on-call, both within the parameters of the Equality Act 2010

Clincical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
