Job overview

The Associate Director of Finance is a strategic role reporting to the Deputy Chief Finance Officer within the Finance Division.  The post holder is responsible for providing strategic financial support for major infrastructure projects and delivering expert financial analysis and planning.  This includes interpreting government policy changes, managing Trust financial policies, and advising on complex financial matters to both finance and non-finance stakeholders across the Trust.  The role also has responsibility for the monthly production of Service Line Reporting and the annual submission of the National Cost Collection.

Main duties of the job

  • Evaluate investment opportunities and develop major business cases, including strategic financial modelling, sensitivity analysis, and option appraisal (including IFRS impacts).
  • Provide timely, accurate project financial reporting (incurred costs, forecasts, budgets) to committees and senior leaders, highlighting variances and key risks.
  • Identify, quantify, communicate, and help mitigate forward-looking financial risks to the CFO and Board, including impacts of capital plans, leases, and policy changes.
  • Lead development of relevant funding bids and long-term funding plans; manage external relationships with funders and key NHS stakeholders (e.g., ICB partners).
  • Design, implement, and maintain digital finance systems, controls, and documentation for capital/digital/staffing business cases, ensuring compliance with DHSC/NHSE/HM Treasury guidance and NHS accounting rules.
  • Support governance and change control by advising on approvals, budgeting/cost allocation, and oversight of contingencies to ensure risks are appropriately reflected.
  • Provide expert technical advice, resolve complex finance issues, and present complex information clearly to finance and non-finance stakeholders; contribute to Trust financial strategy and policy development.
