Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine

Specialty Doctor

Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Specialty Doctor to join our dynamic Emergency Department team at Wexham Park Hospital. This is a full-time position working on a full shift rota, covering all areas of the department, including Resus, Majors, Minors and Paediatric ED.

Our Emergency Department serves a highly diverse population, offering excellent exposure to a broad range of clinical presentations and pathologies. The postholder will play a vital role in the initial assessment, emergency management and resuscitation of acutely unwell patients, including the performance of emergency procedures and investigations.

As a Specialty Doctor, you will contribute to the safe and effective running of the department, including leading the ED overnight, working closely with the Nurse-in-Charge, and providing supervision and support for junior medical staff.

For full details of the role, please refer to the job description and person specification.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties will involve daytime, evening and night shifts providing clinical care in the Resus, Majors, Minors and Paediatric ED. Wexham Park Hospital has a very diverse population, and we see a wide range of clinical pathology.

As a Specialty Doctor you will be involved in the initial assessment and resuscitation of sick patients including emergency procedures and investigations. Overnight you will be expected to lead the department, working closely with the Nurse-in-charge and providing support for more junior doctors.

Working for our organisation

Wexham Park is a busy Emergency Department seeing approximately 125,000 patients a year, of whom over 25% are children. We are a designated Trauma Unit within the Thames Valley Trauma Network.

The Trust was rated ‘Outstanding’ for urgent and emergency services in the last CQC inspection. In 2019 we moved into a new £50 million Emergency Assessment Centre purpose-built building for emergency and urgent care. The ED is based on the ground floor and has 8 resuscitation cubicles, 10 initial assessment cubicles, 30 majors cubicles and a dedicated area for minor injury patients.

The integrated paediatric ED has 10 cubicles and its own separate waiting room. Radiology is situated centrally in the department with 2 plain-film rooms and there is a CT scanner adjacent to the resuscitation room. Ultrasound facilities are also available in addition to POCUS machines within ED itself.

There are currently 16 (13.8 WTE) EM consultants at Wexham Park with a wide range of specialist interests, including dual accreditation in ITU, and PEM and PHEM sub-speciality training. They provide on site consultant cover between 0800-2245 seven days a week.

Trainee doctors from HEE Thames Valley rotate through the department including F2, ACCS, GP trainees and higher specialty trainees (HSTs) in Emergency Medicine. As part of the Emergency Medicine Directorate at Frimley Health NHS Foundation trust, we have good links with the Emergency Department at Frimley Park Hospital.
