Main duties of the job
This is a new opportunity offered by Frimley Health NHS Trust for a Consultant Physician in Orthogeriatric Medicine. The post has been funded jointly by Medical and Orthopaedic Directorates.
The post holder will not be on the general medical on call or look after general medical patients but will work closely with the orthopaedic trauma consultants to provide joint peri-and post-operative care for elderly trauma patients admitted to dedicated trauma and orthopaedic wards. Each trauma ward currently has dedicated F1 and F2 junior doctors who will support the medical management of patients. Junior orthopaedic surgeons, trauma nurse practitioners and trauma coordinators, who coordinate the trauma operating lists in liaison with the anaesthetists and trauma surgeons, provide additional support. The orthogeriatric service is at the moment provided by a dedicated consultant with the support of 1 senior clinical fellow, 1-2 GP trainees and 1 core clinical fellow.

The job is a full-time post comprising of 10 Programmed Activities (PAs).
The final job plan will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Chief of Service.

Essential criteria

Knowledge/ Qualifications/ Special Training
Essential criteria
- FRCS or equivalent registration
- Part III of the Orthopaedic Fellowship intercollegiate examination
- Full GMC registration
- Entry on Specialist Register (CCST or entry expected within 6 months of interview date)
Desirable criteria
- Fellowship of the British Orthopaedic Association and membership of an appropriate interest group
Experience
Essential criteria
- A wide grounding during training of all aspects of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery
- Specific training of more than one year in recognised unit providing specific training in Spinal surgery
- Ability to teach clinical and operative skills
- Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates and operative skills to trainee specialists
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
- Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals
Desirable criteria
- A current practical involvement in general trauma management as it applies to Trauma & Orthopaedics.
- Provider or instructor status as within the Royal College Advanced Trauma Life Support System.
- Proof of having an active and continued knowledge of and experience in practical everyday management of a wide range of orthopaedic disorders.
