Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a Pharmacy Dispensary Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting the safe and efficient operation of the pharmacy dispensary and ward services. Working under the supervision of senior pharmacy staff, you will ensure timely supply of medicines to patients and contribute to maintaining high standards of accuracy and governance.
Main Responsibilities:
- Accurately label and dispense prescriptions for inpatients, outpatients, and discharges, including controlled drugs, in line with departmental SOPs.
- Support ward stock management through top-up services and medicines distribution.
- Assist with Monitored Dosage Systems (MDS) and discharge medicines to facilitate patient flow.
- Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with governance and safety standards.
- Respond to routine enquiries from patients and healthcare staff, providing excellent customer care.
- Participate in medicines management activities, including patient’s own drug (POD) checks and transcribing tasks once accredited.
- Contribute to stock control, ordering, and receipt of goods, ensuring safe storage and handling.
- Support training of new staff and maintain a clean, organised dispensary environment.
- Undertake flexible working patterns, including late shifts and weekends, as part of the rota.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Level 2 NVQ in Pharmacy Services
- 4 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at grade 4 – 9 (or grade A* - C) to include Mathematics, English Language.
Desirable criteria
- Medicines Management Accreditation or POD checks
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Ability to work under pressure and prioritise your workload.
- Able to work on several issues simultaneously and able to reprioritise work in a rapidly changing environment.
- Excellent attention to detail and Confident in computer use.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working in a pharmacy setting
- Experience of strong teamworking.
Desirable criteria
- Previous Training experience.
- Previous experience of EPIC.
- Recent experience of working in a hospital setting.
Special Requirements
Essential criteria
- Ability to work flexible hours including late evenings, weekends and bank holidays on a rotational basis.
