Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust is proud to be expanding its surgical services with the introduction of a state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system at Wexham Park Hospital. This multi-million-pound investment marks an exciting step forward in the Trust’s commitment to innovation, patient safety, and high-quality care.

At Wexham Park Hospital, robotic surgery will be delivered across multiple specialties, including Urology, Upper GI, Surgery, Gynaecology, and Colorectal Surgery.

As part of this new service development, we are seeking motivated and skilled professionals who want to be at the forefront of robotic surgery within the NHS. This is a unique opportunity to help shape a developing service, contribute to its future growth, and work within a forward-thinking organisation that values training, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as first or second assistant to the operating surgeon under supervision.
  • To assist with surgical procedures in the both the elective and trauma operating theatre.
  • To assist with NHS operating sessions where an assistant is required.
  • To provide a skilled, informed assistance to the operating surgeon during the process of surgery
  • To provide a comprehensive range of clinical care to patients in the pre-operative environment
  • To contribute to the assessment and evaluation of patient care needs and the setting of standards of care within the theatre environment.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (with NMC) or ODP With HCPC registration).
  • Successful completion of a Level 6 UK accredited Surgical First Assistant course MSPP (Mentor) formally the advanced scrub practitioner course

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to teach
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues/ quality issues
  • Knowledge of health and safety issues/ protocols
  • Theatre equipment and materials with excellent standard of manual dexterity
Desirable criteria
  • Complaints procedure training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience as a Surgical First Assistant (or equivalent experience) within a Theatre practitioner role, post surgical first assistant course
  • Significant experience in a variety of theatre specialties
  • Evidence of involvement with student learning/ mentoring
  • Management/ leadership ability
