We are seeking to appoint two high-calibre individuals to join our dynamic, expanding, and forward-thinking team of Urology consultants. Our department has a clear vision to enhance its clinical and academic profile, and these new Consultant posts are key to supporting our strategic growth.
They will complement the existing consultant workforce in what is a high-volume, fast-paced District General Hospital setting.
In addition to core urology, there is ample opportunity for subspecialty development. Current service priorities include:
Enhancing and expanding our stone and BPH services, with procedures such as ureteroscopy, PCNL, HoLEP, and MIST
Leading and co-ordinating the haematuria and bladder cancer pathways, including supervision of TULA and Synergo therapies
Developing andrology and paediatric urology services to further diversify our service offering
These posts can be shaped around the strengths and interests of outstanding candidates.
Applicants must be listed on the General Medical Council (GMC) Register and either already on the Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.
The roles offered are for Consultant Urological Surgeons, each with 10 programmed activities (PAs). While the posts will be Trust-wide, the primary base of activity will be Wexham Park Hospital and Heatherwood Hospital.
Given the rising demand in both cancer and non-cancer urology, the appointees will focus primarily on delivering high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic care in acute and elective settings. Subspecialty development is not only supported but strongly encouraged, and the Trust is highly regarded for its commitment to innovation and service development.
Start date: The successful applicants are expected to take up post as soon as possible.
Emergency Service:
The post holder will participate in the urology on-call rota, currently operating at a 1:8 frequency, with prospective cover for both planned and unplanned absences.
Significant investment has recently been secured to modernise the acute surgical care model across the Trust, including the establishment of a dedicated Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at the Wexham Park site. As part of this transformation, the department has implemented a Consultant of the Week model. This structure enhances continuity of care, ensures high standards of supervision for junior colleagues, and maximises the quality of emergency service provision.
During the on-call week, the post holder will be free from elective commitments to allow full focus on emergency care. The service is supported by a fully staffed 24-hour middle-grade rota, complemented by urology-specific SHO-level support seven days a week.
Outpatients:
Outpatient clinics are delivered across multiple sites, including Wexham Park, King Edward VII Hospital, Heatherwood Hospital, and St Mark’s Hospital. The post holder may be required to work at any of these locations as part of their job plan.
Teaching and Training:
The department takes pride in its commitment to education and actively supports the teaching and supervision of undergraduate medical students, deanery trainees (FY1, FY2, CST, and SPR levels), and locally employed doctors.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate education, and will be required to obtain appropriate teaching qualifications to fulfil clinical and educational supervision responsibilities.
