Job overview

The Oncoplastic Clinical Fellow post is now in its 11th successful year, and has been created as a result of increased activity demands, Royal College of Surgeons training requirements regarding the Breast Surgery Curriculum, and to help achieve New Deal compliance for junior medical staff by supporting the general surgical patient workload.

The post-holder will be expected to ensure adequate support is given to the Breast Team.

This post will be in cross-site, with 6 months at The Parapet (King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor) and 6 months at Frimley Park Hospital (Frimley, Surrey)

Main duties of the job

The breast surgeons offer a full repertoire of diagnostic, excisional and reconstructive breast surgery procedures. The team also offers the full complimentary range of oncoplastic symmetrisation procedures such as reduction, augmentation, mastopexy as well as complex revisional procedures and lateral chest wall perforator flaps. Private practice is also delivered on-site which gives additional opportunistic training in cosmetic procedures.

- Undertake regular outpatient clinics

- Preparation for and contribution to the weekly Breast Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Meetings

- To work closely with Breast multi-disciplinary team to manage the breast patients in their pathway.

- To actively participate in both cross-site departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB/BS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration to cover the scope of employment
  • MRCS or equivalent
  • ATLS
Desirable criteria
  • Distinctions, Scholarships, prizes,
  • Other degrees e.g. BSc, Masters, PhD (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 4 years post qualification experience of which 2 years must be in a general surgery post at ST1/2 level or equivalent
  • Demonstrate experience of teaching & training ST1/2 or equivalent and F1s
  • Competent in procedures e.g. CPR, infection control, physical examination, history taking etc
  • Evidence of keeping professional knowledge and skills up to date
Desirable criteria
  • Previous research experience
  • Has participated in clinical audit
  • Experience working at middle grade in a surgical speciality
  • Previous breast surgery experience

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Understands the principles of clinical governance - ensures patients are not put at risk
  • Understanding of the basic principles of research
  • Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Able to communicate clearly in written and spoken English
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands the need for and appreciates the role of audit in clinical practice
