Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our innovative and forward-thinking Respiratory Services as we expand our highly regarded team to deliver an Acute Respiratory Virtual Ward. With newly secured funding, we are seeking a motivated and experienced Band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist / Practitioner to play a key role in shaping and delivering high-quality respiratory care across East Berkshire.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work within a supportive, multidisciplinary team providing patient-centred care in the community and hospital settings.

Main duties of the job

You will deliver specialist respiratory assessment and intervention for patients with a wide range of acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Working collaboratively with nurses, physiotherapists, nursing associates, associate practitioners, technicians and administrative colleagues, you will contribute to the development of holistic, evidence-based management plans tailored to individual patient needs.

The role involves assessing patients with complex physical and psychological presentations, planning and implementing personalised treatment programmes, and supporting the wider team in delivering safe, effective care.

A strong understanding of respiratory disease management is essential, including knowledge of local and national guidance relating to:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Bronchiectasis

  • Interstitial Lung Disease

  • Asthma

  • Home Oxygen therapy

A special interest in COPD would be advantageous.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This role is based in Windsor, covering East Berkshire, with inpatient care delivered at Wexham Park Hospital.

The post is primarily Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm, with future plans to expand service provision.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse – Part 1,2,12.
  • First degree in nursing, or demonstrable experience at this level
  • Teaching / assessment programme
  • Relevant specialist post basic programme in respiratory / experience or relevant community nursing qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Diploma/ degree in respiratory care (COPD / Asthma) or willing to complete

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant clinical experience in the same or related specialty OR recent clinical experience in the acute or community setting
  • Degree in nursing, or demonstrable experience at this level
  • Teaching/assessment programme
Desirable criteria
  • Previous community nursing experience
  • CBG / ABG interpretation

Skills & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge in general nursing
  • Knowledge of the COPD and asthma outcomes strategy, NICE & BTS guidelines
  • Clinical knowledge & skills in respiratory care
  • Able to work autonomously and within a team.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Previous experience of formal / informal teaching of patients & staff
  • Demonstrates skilled written and verbal communication skills.
  • Keyboard and word processing skills
  • Commitment to multidisciplinary working
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of applying research evidence to clinical practice
  • Presentation and teaching experience
  • Advanced clinical assessment skills
  • Knowledge of blood gas interpretation

Special requirements

Essential criteria
  • Full driving licence and access to a car for use to travel across sites and perform domiciliary visits
  • Willing to be able to work weekends and unsocial hours
