Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Neuro Rehab Physiotherapist to join the team on the Bradley Unit, based in Woking Hospital as part of Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The post is 22.5 hours a week working on the Bradley Unit - a 20 bedded,  Regional, Level 2b specialist Neurorehabilitation Unit.

Main duties of the job

Undertake advanced assessments, formulate clinical diagnoses, problem lists and patient led goals, to provide appropriate treatment for patients with neurological conditions which may be acute or sub-acute, complex and / or chronic presentations

Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, putting patient care and the patient experience first.

Show passion for providing a high level of care and safeguarding to patients in our services

Have the ability to use initiative, communicate with empathy and be an effective team player

Demonstrate leadership skills and deputise for the team leads whenever necessary 

Actively participate in service development and contribute to monitoring of standards of practice, and take personal responsibility in professional development and professional registration requirements

Line manage within the Bradley Unit Neuro rehab therapies team consisting of qualified and non-qualified staff

Be responsible for the Physiotherapy assessment, rehabilitation and management of a complex clinical neuro caseload from admission through to discharge, including liaison and onwards referrals.

Be involved in developing the service in line with national and local strategic plan.

There may be occasions when you will be expected to transfer your skills to support acute stroke/neurological patients/ESD patients or for weekend working as the service requires.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical or Technical

1.      Undertake specialist patient assessments, including those with diverse or complex presentations/multipathologies and assess patients jointly with other members of the multidisciplinary team

2.      Use sound investigative, analytical and clinical reasoning skills, manual assessment techniques and diagnostic procedures to assess and develop treatment programmes

3.      Devise individualised physiotherapy management and / or treatment plans, using a range of treatment/ management options, to include patient education and exercise and use of groupwork/ classes in other settings, also including video and telephone consultation

4.      Formulate accurate prognoses and recommend best course of intervention, developing comprehensive, timely discharge plans, liaising with community rehabilitation teams and intermediate care teams

5.      Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment programmes if required

 

Leadership or Managerial

1.      Take responsibility for and actively record your own personal development

2.      Ensure professional competence is maintained by participating in all CPPD opportunities and maintaining a portfolio

3.      Participate in the appraisal scheme as an appraisee and appraiser (including for junior staff, students, or assistants/technicians, other therapists, nursing staff and care workers within the clinical area)

4.      Participate in training sessions as a recipient and facilitator

5.      Disseminate any training received to other staff and health care professionals     

6.      Take responsibility for the supervision of Band 5 Physiotherapists on rotation, Students and Assistants

7.      Support the Band 7 Physiotherapy team leader with the appraisals of Band 5 Physiotherapists on rotation and Assistants

 

Communication and Engagement

1.      Communicate effectively with all disciplines involved in patient care, both within and outside the organisation, to ensure effective multidisciplinary working

2.      Communicate complex and sensitive information to patients, carers and other staff including imparting unwelcome news relating to their rehabilitation potential and gaining cooperation for treatment and valid consent

3.      Use influencing and motivational skills to encourage patients to manage their own conditions

4.      Communicate any changes in care plan or treatment approach to other physiotherapists as necessary

5.            Ensure timely and effective communication with the Clinical/Therapy Leads on all professional matters

6.            Manage frequently highly stressful, upsetting or emotional situations in an empathetic manner

 

Information and reporting

  1.      Regularly participate in and lead on appropriate work-related research/evaluation projects and be aware of current research relevant to the speciality

Service Improvement

1.      Maintain the high standards of the service by contributing towards individual, team and service objectives

2.      Achieve and maintain a high standard of clinical care using evidence-based practice, keeping up to date with clinical developments, analysing current research, discussing and implementing changes in your clinical practice and encouraging this throughout the team

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC Registered Physiotherapist
  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy or equivalent recognised Physiotherapy qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant post graduate training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in provision of Physiotherapy assessment and intervention for those with a neurological diagnosis
  • Experience in complex patient management within the NHS
  • Evidence of teaching and involvement in service development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in line managing junior staff
  • Involvement in special interest groups
  • Supervision of students

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Effective communication with colleagues and patients
  • Knowledge of a broad range of treatment approaches and evidence base
