The department are looking to recruit a clinical tutor who will be a surgical trainee with an interest in undergraduate education. The post is fixed term for 12 months due to funding. The incumbent would preferably have at least part 1 of the MRCS but more junior applicants would be considered. They should have a proven track record in education, for example contribution to ward based teaching during foundation jobs. The teaching registrar would work under the educational leadership of Mr Gokul KandaSwamy, Consultant Urologist based in Morriston Hospital, Swansea. The specialty attachment in Surgery in the present format for GEM students cover Urology, Breast, Vascular, Colorectal and Upper GI & HPB. The post holder may have to travel between the sites as required to deliver the teaching commitments.

There may be scope for a further extension of 12 months subject to further funding being available from SIFT. Please note that all SIFT posts maximum tenure is 24 months.

Main duties of the job

· Having an overview and ownership of GEM teaching on placement.

· Anticipate and troubleshoot placement related issues in surgery working with leads and medical education centre teams

· Leading ward based teaching for students where required

· Contributing to tutorials during the placement.

· Faculty for simulation for surgical SIMS for 3rd year students, working with simulation leads (usually 18-20 days a year)

· Organising and running a teaching clinic linked to existing clinics

· Supporting students with mini-Cex assessments and sign offs of learning outcomes

· Encouraging the development of examination and clinical reasoning skills

· Promoting principles of prescribing and psychopharmacology

· Providing opportunities for students to practice clinical skills

· Obtaining early informal feedback from students in mid placement reviews

· Supporting students in difficulty

· Promoting the biopsychosocial model, holistic practice, and person centred clinical principles

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people.    We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.  

 

Mental Health and learning Disabilities services are provided both in hospital settings (Cefn Coed Hospital, Swansea Caswell clinic and Taith Newydd at Glanrhyd Bridgend) and other community settings.  

 

We also have community hospital and primary care resource centres providing clinical services outside the main hospitals.   

 

The Health Board is part of A Regional Collaboration for Health (ARCH), which is a partnership with Hywel Dda UHB and Swansea University. Aimed at improving the wellbeing and wealth of Southwest Wales.

Essential criteria
  • Full Registration with the GMC with License to practice
  • MBBS or a primary medical qualification recognized by GMC
Desirable criteria
  • Further relevant degree/diploma
  • Teaching qualification/Higher qualification in medical education

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of appropriate acute and elective surgical experience
  • Clinical and procedural skills expected at end of Foundation training
  • Understanding of clinical governance and audit procedures
  • Clinical and procedural skills expected at the level of Core / Speciality surgical traine
  • Evidence of teaching and training of post/undergraduate clinical staff
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing audit
  • Experience of research in Surgery/ Urology
  • Clinical and procedural skills expected at the level of Core / Speciality surgical trainee.
  • Experience in assessing and managing surgical emergencies
  • Have given feedback and assessed others in prior training / area of work

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
