Job overview

Do you share our health board values; Caring for each other; working together; always improving? If so we would love for you to come and work for Swansea Bay University HB.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Specialty Doctor in  Adult Mental Health Services.  The successful candidate will be based in Tonna Hospital  with the members of the community team, working within the community and our in-patient services at Tonna Hospital in Neath.

You will be welcomed to a well-established and supportive multi-disciplinary team in delivering high standard services. You will provide 8 sessions of direct clinical care and have 2 sessions for supporting professional activities. You will be based, along with the Consultant, at Tonna Hospital working with other multi-disciplinary teams.

You have your own office with telephone, desktop computer and dictaphone. You also are eligible for your own dedicated iPad if you wish. The team has a dedicated secretary at Tonna hospital, who provides you with secretarial and administrative support. The sector provides services to both an urban and rural population, across all socioeconomic groups.

Main duties of the job

Your working week is split between out-patient and community work as well as ward round support to the Consultant if needed. This will include work related to use of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act

You will be required to adhere to the principles of good medical practice laid down in the guidance of ‘Good Medical Practice’ issued by the General Medical Council.

There is no on-call commitment associated with this post, but this could be available as part of the wider psychiatric on-call rota should you wish. The postholder will work within mental health providing services to older adults.

You will be expected to participate in the management of the department in the absence of the Consultant and in the interest of the smooth running of the Mental Health Services.

We are a University Health Board and therefore the team regularly has medical students and physician associate students on placement with us. You will be expected to participate in informal support/teaching of these students in the clinical setting. There are also opportunities for you to become more involved in delivery of formal teaching sessions for students if this is an interest in your personal development.

Working for our organisation

The Mental Health Directorate is responsible for providing Adult Mental Health Services, Older People Mental Health Services, Substance Misuse Services, Forensic Psychiatry and Rehabilitation & Recovery Services. The Service Group provides a comprehensive range of services to meet complex needs of adults with mental health problems in the  Swansea Bay divisions of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.  Each division is sub-divided into geographical sectors.  This post is based in the Neath and Port Talbot locality.

You will be expected to take part in such activities as Clinical Effectiveness Audits, Training Programmes, Postgraduate Meetings and Clinical Governance.

You will be required to participate in the LHB’s risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Trust.  Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory.
