Job overview

Swansea Bay University Health Board have an opportunity to experience on a permanent basis contract the role of Educational Supervisor. We feel this is a good opportunity for any future Educational Role that becomes available. Post is to commence as soon as possible on a permanent basis Successful candidate would be expected to deliver 2 sessions/ 7.5 hours per week initially on a Monday up until September 2026 and on a Friday thereafter.

 

The Dental Teaching Unit currently has 4 Foundation Dentist, supported by Educational Supervisors. Both the Foundation Dentists and Supervisors provide dental sessions to patients of the local area and through the 111 in hours access. The Educational Supervisor will support the Foundation Dentist with their clinical work, treatment planning and portfolio.

 

The purpose of this post is to work collaboratively with both the Health Board and Wales Deanery to improve, facilitate and develop dental health care services in SBU area, by providing comprehensive general dental services within an NHS environment, providing effective care to patients and training / mentoring to the Foundation Dentist. The post holder will also be responsible for liaising with the deanery regarding the study day programme, providing direction to the Business Manager, while managing the Foundation Dentists and other dental staff on the training side of the unit in line with patients needs and GDS contract.

Main duties of the job

Education and training

The post holder will be required to work with the Lead Senior Dentist and the Post-graduate Deanery to ensure that Dental Foundation Trainees achieve the competencies laid out in the Dental Foundation Trainee curriculum.

The post holder must be available for guidance and training of the Dental Foundation Trainees and other Dental Care Professionals in training in the unit as agreed with the Lead Senior Dentist).

The post holder may be required to set aside a period of one hour each week for a formal in practice seminar with each trainee. This must be in the normal practice working hours and be in protected time.

The post holder will co-operate with the Lead Senior Dentist and Business Manager to provide surgery conditions and facilities to allow the trainees to work at least 28 hours per week when the study day course is running and 35 hours at other times.

The post holder will be responsible for supporting joint working arrangements with the Community Dental Service (CDS) and that trainees receive experience of a multi unit, integrated dental environment.

There will be a requirement for the post holder to keep up their CPD in line with General Dental Council regulations

During the course of their duties, the post-holder may be asked to attend meetings.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Managing People and Leadership

To manage the activities in the dental suite (training element) and to take responsibility for the overall supervision of clinical processes.

To co-operate with the Business Manager over matters which affect the smooth running of the service

To support regular clinical staff meetings and any other meetings which are arranged within the training element of the service

To provide leadership and assistance to colleagues within the training element of the dental suite, where necessary

To liaise with colleagues in the Health Board and Dental Postgraduate Department with specific reference to the dental suite

To liaise with General Medical Practitioners, Dental Practitioners and other professionals in order to provide co-ordinated care for patients. In particular, to work with colleagues in the Community Dental Service and other Health Board integrated services to ensure that patients with special needs are cared for in the most appropriate manner

To support the management of referrals of high need patients from General Dental Practitioners.

To work with the Community Dental Service and other Health Board Dental Services based in the Resource Centre to ensure that the dental suite offers an integrated approach to dental care for all groups of patients

To work with other services within the Port Talbot Resource Centre to ensure that an integrated approach to health care is an ongoing part of the dental suite’s service delivery plans

This post may require the post holder to attend meetings and events outside of normal working hours

You will be required to participate in the Health Board’s risk management process and in clinical audit and other clinical governance activities within the department, the directorate and the Health Board. Adherence to Caldicot Principles is mandatory.

 Clinical

To provide a full range of routine dental treatment

To provide assessment and treatment for those adults and children who require treatment, including those who develop urgent dental problems

To identify patients suitable for treatment by the Foundation Trainees

To assess individual patient need and ongoing NHS care for patients with more complex treatment requirements, both by working with Community Dental Services and Hospital Dental Services and referring patients onwards, as necessary

To ensure that all correspondence regarding patients, such as letters to doctors, dentists and other health care professionals are dealt with promptly and that these are kept in appropriate order in patients files

To work with others within the Health Board to ensure that patient pathways for dental care are effective and make the best use of clinical resources

You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the administration of the department.

You will be required to participate and contribute to Clinical Audit in line with the Health Board’s policy.

 

 

Professional

You will be required to participate in the Health Board’s Appraisal Scheme in conjunction with your Supervising Consultant, to identify training and development needs. You will be expected to participate in personal and professional development to fulfil Royal College CME requirements.

Dentists need to adhere to all Health Board and local policies which cover radiation exposures as currently outlined in IRMER regulations.

Subject to the terms and conditions of service the post holder will be expected to observe policies and procedures of the Health Board drawn up in consultation with the professions, where they involve clinical matters.

 

For services provided which are subject to the payment of an additional fee as a general principle work undertaken during sessions will not attract the additional fee, if a fee is paid this must be passed to the Health Board. There are circumstances which allow the additional fee to be retained by an individual and as a general principle this is for work done in his/her own time, or during annual or unpaid leave. More information regarding this is provided within the Terms and Conditions of Service which are available from the Medical HR Department; however, it is advisable to discuss with your Directorate/ Department if wishing to carry out any work that would be subject to an additional fee and can form part of the job planning process.

  • BDS or equivalent qualification
  • Full registration with the GDC
  • Regular attendance on dental postgraduate courses and appropriate CPD.
  • Developing Dental Educators (DDE) and maintained refresher training.
