We have an exciting opportunity to work in the Swansea Bay University Health Board as our  Deputy Director of Public Health (Consultant grade AfC or Medical & Dental).

You will help shape the further development and implementation of approaches that support us in realising our population health ambitions, including working with our primary care, third sector and community sectors.

Main duties of the job

You would take an individual portfolio and provide leadership to the team supporting the Health Board in delivering its Population Health Strategy, working at senior leadership level in the Health Board, with Local partners and the NHS in Wales, including Public Health Wales.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Consultant with practical knowledge of all three domains of Public Health, to step into leadership of an enthusiastic and committed multidisciplinary team.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Master’s in Public Health or equivalent. In depth understanding of the health and care systems and the relationships of local national government as well as LPHT hosted at SBUHB HQ, plus an in-depth knowledge of: Policy, Budget Management, HR and methods of developing clinical quality assurance, quality improvement, evaluations and evidence based public health practice.
  • High level of understanding of epidemiology and statistics, public health practice, health protection promotion, health economics and health care evaluation. Understanding of social and political environment.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MFPH by examination, by exemption or by assessment.
  • Inclusion in the GMC Full and Specialist Register with a license to practice/GDC Specialist List (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview) or Inclusion in the UK Public Health.
  • Register (UKPHR) for Public Health Specialists (or be eligible for registration within six months of interview). If included in the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in a specialty other than public health medicine/dental public health, candidates must have equivalent training and/or appropriate experience of public health practice. Public health specialty registrar applicants who are not yet on the GMC Specialist Register/GDC Specialist List in dental public health/UKPHR must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they are within 6 months of gaining entry at the date of interview; all other applicants must provide verifiable signed documentary evidence that they have applied for inclusion in the GMC/GDC/UKPHR specialist registers.
  • If an applicant is UK trained in Public Health, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of using complex information to explain public health issues to a range of audiences. Significant experience of public health practice at senior level of contributing at Board level.
  • Experience of working in complex political and social environments.
  • Experience in staff and corporate management, training, development.
  • Experience in evaluations and literature reviews.
  • Experience of budget management and performance reviews.
Desirable criteria
  • Media experience demonstrating delivery of effective health behaviour or health promotion messages.
  • Scientific publications, presentation of papers at forums, such as conferences and seminars.
