The Welsh Centre for Burns & Plastic Surgery at Morriston Hospital are looking for applications from for a LAS ST Higher (ST3+) doctor to cover a vacant post wef 06/08/2025 – 22/12/2025 in the first instance. 

The post is not recognised for training but the experience will be comparable to that of a ST Higher and participation in educational programmes, audit and research will be encouraged and supported.

The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery in Morriston is regarded as one of the premier training centres for plastic surgery training in the UK with close links to the academic plastic surgery research unit Recon Regen and Swansea University Medical School.

The post would be ideal for an ambitious trainee looking to gain further experience in plastic surgery in preparation for a future career in plastic surgery or related specialty.

This is a full time LAS ST Higher post participating on the Full shift rota. The plastic surgery service provides outreach services to nearly all the acute hospitals in S Wales, serving a population of 2.3M people. We are the only providers of plastic surgery located in Wales; the population of North Wales receiving their services from units in North West England. 

Main duties of the job

The facilities available in the Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery are some of the best in the UK, with 3 large operating theatres, dedicated plastic surgery trauma theatre, plastic surgery specialised observation ward (PSMU), an adult elective plastic surgery ward, an adult admissions unit with 18 beds, children’s beds and a paediatric HDU for tertiary surgical services. There is a plastic surgical outpatient and dressings suite and dedicated occupational, physio and speech & language therapy departments. The burns centre is exceptional, with 2 dedicated operating theatres; a 10 bed burns ITU/HDU, a 10 bed adult low dependency/ rehabilitation ward for adults, a 10 bed children’s ward and also rehabilitation and outreach services. There is a dedicated Plastics Surgery Treatment Centre located adjacent to the elective ward which provides planned day case treatment via 2 operating rooms. The Clinical Plastic Surgery Unit has recently collaborated with Swansea University to form The Reconstructive Surgery & Regenerative Medicine Research Unit (ReconRegen). Located across two main sites, The Institute of Life Science at Swansea University & The European Centre for Nanohealth (Wales premier purpose-built £50million medical research facility) and a research suite at The Welsh Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery (ABM University health Board).

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people.    We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
Desirable criteria
  • ALS or ATLS or CCrISP
  • MRCS

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement
  • Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date
