Job overview

The senior therapist is an integral part of the workforce within the dental services in primary care.

The post holder will:
• Be responsible for the delivery of advanced, highly specialist and complex dental care. 
• Works largely autonomously, referring to Dental consultants where deemed necessary or at pre agreed intervals. 
• Will have a responsibility to supervise clinical training at a specialist level for other clinical staff and provide professional 
advice based on clinical experience and training. 
• Must be prepared to communicate teaching and development goals to other staff both within the clinic and as part of a 
wider teaching programme. 
• Undertake these teaching, supervision mentoring and assessment roles where required and promotes a culture of learning.
• Provide direct access when appropriate. To include preparation of treatment plans to ensure the delivery of effective dental 
care.
• Often be the first point of contact for patients who are undergoing treatment. 
• Responsible for alerting the supervising consultant to any concerns highlighted by the patient or indeed noted by the 
therapist themselves. 
Although accountable to the dental Consultant for ensuring safe and effective clinical care and patient management, the job 
holder is accountable for their own actions without direct supervision.

Main duties of the job

Planning and Design
• The Therapist is responsible for the organisation and running of clinics and is also responsible for a wide range of support 
systems in place such as language line, which contribute to an effective and successful patient experience:.
• Responsible for planning and organising:
➢ Own workload
➢ Prioritising patient appointments 
➢ Clinical diaries and liaison with consultants

Operational 
• Responsible for a group of patients undergoing complex, highly specialised, multidisciplinary dental treatment.
• Use advanced knowledge and skills to assess clinical situations and select and adapt appropriate complex techniques to 
adapt the treatment to the specific needs of the patient. 
• Provide a range of specialised dental care within Hospital and other peripheral settings.
• Responsible for prolonged periods of time undertaking detailed work with high levels of precision and accuracy. Use 
highly developed physical skills to use a range of precision tools and equipment for dentistry intervention. Routine use of 
expensive specialised equipment.

Essential Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or Degree in Dental Therapy.
  • Registered with the General Dental Council as a Dental Therapist.
  • Certified Competence of Extended duties.
  • Member of an appropriate medical protection society.
  • Use of the English language to a high level as an integral part of excellent, effective written and verbal communication.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of further Education.
  • Ability to overcome language and communication barriers.
  • Knowledge of the Hospital, general and community dentistry.

Essential Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of treating a range of patients with special care requirements, requiring complex treatments
  • Proven leadership skills in managing change in clinical settings.
  • Can demonstrate a good record of achievement in developing clinical practice.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of dental therapy practice in a GDS, Community Dental Service or Hospital Service.

Essential Aptitude and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working as part of, and lead a small team.
  • Able to demonstrate situations where effective leadership and management skills have been used.
  • Able to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when working with others
Desirable criteria
  • Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh.
  • Evidence of undertaking presentation to groups.

  • Ability to travel within geographical area. Able to work hours flexibly.
  • Current clean full driving licence.
  • Satisfactory Enhanced DBS clearance including an Adults and Childrens Barred List check (as relevant to the Post).
