Job overview
This is a new and exciting opportunity to join a well-established Occupational Therapy Service within Swansea Bay University Health Board as a Band 8a Clinical Lead. The successful applicant will play an integral role in supporting the strategic development, review and modernisation plans of the Community Mental Health Team. They will provide clinical leadership within the OT Team, whilst offering specialist professional advice and practical guidance regarding complex cases. This post holder will be expected to carry a clinical caseload whilst supporting the development of clinical pathways and priorities.
The successful candidate will have demonstrable leadership skills, including service development, as well as broad clinical experience that can be adapted to the scope of this role. Expert prioritisation and time management skills will be required to balance the competing demands of this exciting post.
The Occupational Therapy service in Swansea Bay University Health Board continues to grow due to investment, brave leadership and innovative clinical practice. This position will allow the post holder the opportunity to take a lead role in the ongoing development of this service.
Main duties of the job
- To support with the strategic development, review and modernisation plans of the Community Mental Health Team.
- To manage a defined caseload within specialist area, using evidence based / client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the outcomes of intervention
- To organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
- To work in partnership with service users, carers and all stake holders including the multidisciplinary team to identify relevant goals and support service development.
- To provide leadership and supervision to the OT staff across Adult Mental Health Services
- To regularly supervise Occupational Therapy students on practice placements.
- To be a clinical leader for Occupational Therapy within identified specialist area leading by example, demonstrating good practice, openness and responsiveness to emerging evidence.
- To provide highly developed expertise within the MDT setting.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- BSc (Hons) Occupational therapy Degree or Diploma in occupational therapy
- Masters or its equivalent level of advanced post grad training or experience
- Post registration training in area of clinical expertise and clinical leadership
- Registered member of HCPC
- Hold a recognised management qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Substantial experience in Occupational Therapy including experience at a higher clinical level
- Experience of leading a project, developing a new service, or service/practice innovation
- Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance & audit and ability to apply to practice
- Experience of operational management and professional leadership e.g. staff meetings
- Knowledge and experience in dealing with a range of Human Resource issues such as Appraisal, Performance Management & Conflict
- Knowledge, understanding & experience of the roles of other professionals & the principles of partnership working with key stakeholders in the service area
Skills
Essential criteria
- Advanced interpersonal skills including developed oral and written communication skills with people from a wide variety of backgrounds
- Advanced clinical reasoning skills and is able to make highly specialist clinical decisions following assessments of complex cases, negotiating appropriately with others where opinions differ
- Experience in managing change and adjusting plans quickly and responsively in the light of new information or changed circumstances
- Ability to work under pressure and establish priorities
