The department of Old Age Psychiatry are looking to recruit a 2 year fixed term Specialty doctor to join their team.
You will be part of the wider multidisciplinary team and will be responsible for the assessment, diagnoses and managing common psychiatric conditions including dementia, mood disorders and psychosis in the older adult population.
You will also be required to be able to identify delirium and other physical health conditions that impact on patients’ mental health.
To be able to complete MHA assessments as a section 12 approved doctor
Be able to perform and interpret ECG’s
Conduct thorough risk assessments in order to safely manage patients.
Main duties of the job
You will be welcomed to a well-established and supportive multi-disciplinary team in delivering high standard services. You will provide 8 sessions of direct clinical care and have 2 sessions for supporting professional activities.
You will be based, along with the Consultant, at Ysbryd Y Coed, Cefn Coed Hospital, a modern purpose built facility that houses our in patient areas for Swansea residents.
Clinical duties involve the assessment, investigation and management of older adults with dementia and functional psychiatric disorders, as well as those individuals presenting with younger onset dementias. Services are delivered within the framework of the Wales Mental Health Measure and provide a needs led service
Your working week is split between out-patient and community work including home visits as well as ward round support to the Consultant as needed. This will include work related to use of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act. A draft job plan is as detailed in Appendix 1.
There is no on-call commitment associated with this post, but this could be available as part of the wider psychiatric on-call rota should you wish.
You will be expected to participate in the management of the department in the absence of the Consultant and in the interest of the smooth running of the Mental Health Services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
You will be expected to deputise for absent colleagues and in exceptional unforeseen circumstances may have to perform additional duties to ensure the safe running of the department. Where such duties take place outside your normal contracted duties, you will receive either an equivalent off duty period or will be remunerated appropriately.
You will provide advice to clinicians in hospital and primary care, originating either from telephone calls or ward referrals.
You will be responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care ofpatients and the administration of the department.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration
- MB BS or recognised equivalent
- 4 years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme in psychiatry.
Desirable criteria
- MRCPsych or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
- Working as part of the management team
- Teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff
- Evidence of participation in, progressing and completing audit
Desirable criteria
- Experience of research
- Previous experience of working in the NHS/experience of NHS working practices and systems.
