Applications are invited for the post of ‘BCN/BAPRAS Breast and Lymphoedema Microsurgery Fellow’ to join a dynamic team of specialist plastic surgeons, delivering high quality breast reconstruction and lymphoedema care in South Wales.

We are looking for candidates who will help deliver high-quality breast reconstruction and lymphoedema surgery services. The post is unique in that it aims to not only provide post FRCS Plast (or equivalent) specialist training and experience in breast reconstruction but also in lymphatic surgery, in preparation for an NHS consultant post.

 

Main duties of the job

This fellowship will  provide training in the surgical management of lymphoedema. This will be via lymphoedema MDT and clinics, weekly ICG scanning and LVA lists, involvement in cases combining DIEP flap reconstructions with vascularised lymph node transfers as well as high volume liposuction. The fellow will gain a comprehensive understanding of lymphoedema management, selection criteria for surgery and pre and postoperative non-surgical management, in collaboration with Lymphoedema Network Wales, to optimise outcomes. here may be potential for the fellow to participate in other microsurgical cases when available according to learning needs.

Swansea Bay University Health Board has responsibility for the health of around 390,000 people in the Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas, with a budget of around £1 billion and employing 12,500 people.    We are a University Health Board working in partnership with Swansea University, Swansea School of Medicine, the School of Health Science and the Institute of Life Science. The HB has three major hospitals providing a range of services: Morriston and Singleton hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot hospital in Baglan, Port Talbot.

Swansea has a range of shops, cosy cafes, great restaurants, art galleries as well as being able to offer good outdoor lifestyle with its beautiful coastline and beaches on the Gower Peninsula. Swansea also has excellent sporting facilities including the Wales National pool and Swansea.com stadium home to the Ospreys and Swansea City Football Club.

Essential criteria
  • • Full GMC registration
  • • MBBS, FRCS (Plast) or equivalent
  • • Minimum of 7 years postgraduate experience including 5 years as plastics registrar/trainee level in an approved training post, or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • • Higher professional qualifications (e.g. MD or PhD)
  • • Breast reconstruction and/or lymphoedema experience
  • • Evidence of relevant publications in peer reviewed journals.

  • • Ability to fulfil all the duties of the post, including on-call commitments.
  • • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
  • • Recent experience and familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
  • • Breast reconstruction and/or lymphoedema experience
  • • Completion of teaching course of programme
  • • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management
