Main duties of the job
Clinical:
- Provide full therapy service for patients of all ages who appropriately access Newcastle Community Service for advice or treatment.
- Provide and maintain a high standard of comprehensive dental care
Provide treatment where necessary either as sole treatment or part of a planned course of treatment.
Administrative
- Assess the competency of the dental undergraduate students using their electronic portfolios .
- Refer patients to the dental team to undertake any treatment which the Dental Act does not permit Dental Therapists to carry out, and ensuring appropriate use of skill mix.
- Ensure maintenance of accurate clinical records and respect for patient confidentiality and data protection.
- The post holder will be expected to be able to use all equipment required in the provision of dental care. The department uses a dental software ( sensei cloud) for electronic patient records and the post holder will need to be able to use this software once training is provided.
Research
- Participate in audit projects and clinical governate meetings together with other dentists working in the trust.
- Attend all compulsory health and safely lectures as required by the trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Teaching
- Provide clinical teaching and supervision of undergraduate students who will be providing the following:
- The full scope of practice treatment for patients of all ages who appropriately access community dental service for advice or treatment.
- A full range of dental care for all groups in line with their experience and skill.
- Providing treatment where necessary as sole treatment or part of a planned course of treatment.
Job Purpose
- Highly trained healthcare professional carrying preventive oral health education tasks and clinical treatments within the scope of a dental therapist
To provide a dental hygiene and therapy service to patients
To actively promote dental health within the Newcastle Hospitals Foundation Trust.
To teach the BSc students theory and practical skills.
To mentor and counsel, the students.
Person specification
Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
- Higher Diploma in Dental Hygiene/Dental Therapy or Degree in Oral Health Sciences with significant specialist post qualification experience (Master’s level equivalent).
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
- Active GDC registration as a dental therapist
- Experience of patient management in primary and secondary care settings.
- Up to date with extended duties training and evidence of continuing professional development.
- Experience of treating patients who are anxious or have challenging behaviour
Skills & Abilities
Essential criteria
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Desirable criteria
- Ability to use Microsoft office products
- Administration skills
- Teaching skills
