Job overview
This is a vacant substantive Consultant Psychiatrist in the field of General Adult Psychiatry, who will provide input into Rowanwood Working Age Adult (WAA) female assessment and treatment, located within Carleton Clinic, Carlisle.
The post holder would have a balanced job plan. The postholder has the option to work part-time with doing minimum 6 sessions.
The post holder will be part of a multi-disciplinary team that currently includes a Nurse Consultant (AC/ RC), 1 WTE Trust Grade doctor, 1 International Medical Fellow (Specialist grade, s12 approved doctor), registered nurses, healthcare assistants and administration colleagues. The post holder will provide minimum 6 PAs of direct face to face clinical contact to the ward. There is support for flexible working, extended hours and remote working.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will lead the multidisciplinary team in the intensive management of acute, severe mental illness. The postholder will diagnose and treat mental health conditions in working-age adults (typically 18–65), including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, organic illness and depression, provide intensive, short-term inpatient care, crisis management, in a trauma informed manner.
Duties include ward Rounds, daily reviews and professionals meetings : Leading regular MDTS, reviewing medication, and managing patient care plans.
Medicolegal work: Reviewing detentions and testifying at Tribunals.
Collaboration: Working with community teams to facilitate transitions, admissions and discharges.
Support: Providing supervision to junior medical staff and leading on quality improvement projects.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MBBS (or equivalent)
- Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT.
- Approved under Section12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
- Approved Clinician Status.
Desirable criteria
- MRCPsych or equivalent qualification.
- Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
- Has undergone training in educational supervision.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Up to date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry.
- Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation.
Desirable criteria
- An area of special interest relevant to the post as demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of multidisciplinary team working.
- Wide clinical experience in general adult psychiatry in different clinical settings.
- Experience of Clinical Audit.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in multiagency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies.
- Experience in service management or development.
Skills
Essential criteria
- High level of clinical skills.
- Able to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders in Adult Psychiatry.
