Job overview
Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine.
Northumbria’s Critical Care unit has 18 beds and is based at the heart of the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH) which is based in Cramlington, Northumberland. The Trust also provides critical care responsibilities for the other acute hospitals within the trust; Wansbeck General Hospital, North Tyneside General Hospital, Hexham General Hospital. The post would include the delivery of Critical Care consultant responsibility at NSECH, based on a 1 in 12 on-call rota.
NSECH opened in 2015 and is a state of the art, purpose built, emergency care hospital. The successful candidate will be working in the busy critical care department and will be responsible for a mixture of critically ill adult medical and surgical patients.
We are a training unit for medical, critical care, anaesthetic and Foundation residents, as well as Advanced Critical Care Practitioners. The successful candidate will be expected to have an active role in these training programmes.
We are a regional adult trauma unit and we also provide immediate critical care support, stabilisation and transfer for critically ill paediatric patients.

Main duties of the job
Jointly responsible for the provision of Critical Care services to the population of Northumberland. The post holder will be encouraged to develop a special interest to complement the other members of the department and will work with managers and professional colleagues in ensuring maximum efficiency of the service.
Manage personal workload in such a way as to ensure where possible service contract levels are achieved. Participate in the provision of cover on shared basis with colleagues for periods of annual, sickness and study leave, except for prolonged absences where locum cover may be necessary.
Provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under their care and assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.
Maintain an awareness and commitment to organisational priorities and ensure these are communicated effectively to colleagues and staff. Engage in constructive debates about organisational issues through a willingness to interact positively with managers, as well as showing respect to ensure a similar level of respect in return.
Effectively balance loyalty to the service and to the organisation through corporate behaviours and have an ability to anticipate change in current
political climates showing an awareness of where the team sits in the bigger picture.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Fully registered on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register or Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT at date of application
- FFICM (Fellow of Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine) or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration
Desirable criteria
- FUSIC accreditation
- Masters degree or PhD in a relevant field
Experience anbd Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Clinical training and experience in the relevant specialty, equivalent to that required to gain entry to the UK Certificate of Completed Training (CCT) in Critical Care
- ALS
- APLS or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Critical care follow-up clinic experience
- ATLS or equivalent
