An extremely exciting opportunity for two Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurses has arisen for a new Intestinal Failure unit at the Freeman Hospital.

As this is a new unit within the Freeman Hospital, assisting the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse with establishing the Ward and team will be a huge focus for the successful Sister/Charge Nurses within this role in order support with leadership to the Nursing team. This is an exciting and challenging role and will help support the team in providing a safe positive experience and to ensure high quality patient care is delivered. The intestinal Failure unit will be a 15 bedded unit specially designed for IF patients and have a full MDT working with the Nursing team.

The applicants should be passionate about IF patients and have innovative ideas to help further improve our dynamic new unit.

The post holder will be professionally accountable for the maintenance of standards and professional practice as set by the NMC Code of Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour and relevant professional guidelines.

They will regularly take charge of the practice setting or defined area of the practice setting / group of patients and take responsibility for ensuring the coordination and direct provision of high standard of holistic, patient centred care by assessing nursing care and health education needs, and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for each patient.

To demonstrate and facilitate others to develop the necessary skills and experience in ward/department management and provide leadership in the absence of the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

To support the development and implementation of audit, quality and risk management initiatives.

To teach and act as a facilitator/ mentor /assessor / preceptor to nursing students, junior registered and unregistered staff.

Act as a visible, clinical nurse leader and promote team work within a multi-professional environment. Demonstrate critical analysis and decision making skills when undertaking, leading and or supervising the delivery of consistent high quality evidence based care.

  • To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP is absent.
  • In areas within the organisation Nurses / ODPs may be banded at 6 by virtue clinical reasons, for example, critical care.
  • Provide effective support and leadership to staff, patients and carers within the Theatre or Department.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students.
  • Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
  • Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • May be required to participate in an On-call rota as required.

  • Diploma in a health related subject, prepared to take degree level study

  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship)
