Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Clinical Pharmacy Team at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals, as part of a new service, working closely with pre-assessment services and clinics at the Freeman Hospital to ensure patients medicines are reviewed in a timely and appropriate manner prior to their admission to hospital for elective procedures. 

The role will bring you into contact with many surgical specialties across the Trust and you will join a team of experienced Pharmacists and technicians to provide support to those areas to ensure patients medicines are reviewed in a timely and appropriate manner prior to their admission to hospital for elective procedures.

You will be given the opportunity to build experience and expertise in a wide variety of clinical settings and will be expected to attend ward rounds and multidisciplinary meetings where appropriate. You will help support senior pharmacy staff in promoting the safe, effective and economic use of medicines via audit and guideline development and also provide support and training to nursing staff, Pharmacy Technicians, junior Pharmacists and students. 

As this is a new post, we are looking for an innovative individual who is keen to work dynamically to ensure the service runs smoothly and efficiently.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for the implementation and delivery of a co-ordinated, highly effective Pharmacy service within pre-assessment settings.

This will include:

  • Peri-operative support to the pre-assessment unit 
  • Development of clinical guidelines
  • Audit
  • Medicines reconciliation
  • Discharge Facilitation 
  • Mentoring/support to Junior Pharmacists, Technicians and students
  • Act as a key contact for other Pharmacy staff working within the area and act as a specialist in their within the area of practice
  • Provide an advanced level clinical pharmacy service in line with Pharmacy Key Performance Indicators and agreed clinical standards
  • Ensure patients are prioritised within the specialty by using both informed decision making and own professional judgement; in accordance with Trust initiatives and procedures
  • Provide ongoing clinical support and guidance to other pharmacy colleagues and the multidisciplinary team contributing to practice within the specific areas of working
  • Assist senior multidisciplinary colleagues in ensuring that all required medication safety and clinical governance issues are actioned and implemented in a timely manner

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a GPhC registered Pharmacy Technician you will be required to work autonomously, referring to the appropriate members of the MDT when required to do so. You will be expected to use your professional judgement to make decisions, and the role will include elements of staff and student management as well as education and training.

  • To perform the role of an experienced pharmacy technician including giving comprehensive advice, providing supervision and co-operating with colleagues, particularly in relation to the delivery of clinical pharmacy services and promoting the safe use of high-risk medication
  • To contribute to the strategic review and development of clinical pharmacy services, to improve efficiency, patient safety and establish greater integration
  • To assist the Patient Services Operations Manager and the Specialist Lead Pharmacy Technician in delivering efficient and safe medicine supply processes
  • To co-ordinate the safe expansion and development of clinical pharmacy services throughout the Trust
  • To support the training and assessment of technical staff within clinical services
  • To act as an accredited checking technician

Person specification

Qualifications & Education

Essential criteria
  • S/NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and approved underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC in Pharmaceutical Science or equivalent recognised pharmacy technician qualification
  • Regional medicines management course or equivalent (or working towards this)
  • Recognised Accredited Checking Technician qualification
  • Registered with GPhC
Desirable criteria
  • Management qualification
  • A1 (D32/33) Assessor award
  • Level 4 Clinical Diploma for Pharmacy Technicians

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant post qualification experience of working in a hospital environment as a pharmacy technician, during which time the following has been achieved
  • Significant experience of working at ward level as a medicines management technician
  • Experience as an accredited checking technician. Knowledge and understanding of all technical aspects of pharmacy patient services, supported by practical experience and completion of an approved training programme
  • Evidence of professional CPD
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of NHS strategic documents affecting pharmacy and trust vision and values. Practical experience of working as an NVQ
  • Assessor
  • Proven ability to manage staff
  • Proven ability in change management in quality improvement
