Job overview
The Freeman Hospital's Cardio X-Ray department is seeking a full time band 6 Radiographer with a specialist interest in cardiac radiography to join it's team.
Working with the cardio X-Ray team, the successful candidate will rotate through a variety of clinical settings, including two plain film rooms, six cardiac catheter laboratories and other specialised units.
This role involves providing high quality diagnostic and interventional imaging for a range of specialist cardiac procedures, such as angioplasty, EP, device implantations, TAVI and complex structural heart interventions.
A key component of the position includes the participation in the 24/7 PPCI emergency service after training is completed.
Candidates should ideally have previous experience in cardiac catheter labs, and familiarity with Siemens Artis systems is advantageous.

Main duties of the job
- Perform specialist cardiac catheter lab procedures in line with departmental policies and procedures. Previous experience in a cardiac catheter lab is desirable and a specialist knowledge or interest in cardiac radiography is essential.
- Provide high quality diagnostic imaging using safe radiation practices.
- Participate in a 24/7 PPCI emergency service rota after completing training. The ability to work effectively in high pressure situations is essential.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver high quality, efficient and effective patient-centred care in a busy clinical environment. Strong teamwork and communication skills are essential.
- Develop clinical skills and contribute to continuous professional development, with a willingness to participate in additional training and the education of others.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Freeman Hospital’s Cardiothoracic Centre is a regional and national centre of excellence for lung and heart care, providing cardiothoracic diagnostics and intervention/surgery for adults and children under one roof.
Due to expansion of services within the Cardiothoracic Centre, we are seeking to appoint a full time band 6 Radiographer with a specialist interest in cardiac radiography, to join our cardio X-Ray team at Freeman Hospital.
The cardio X-ray team provides a quality service to clinicians and patients in a variety of settings, rotating through 2 plain film rooms, 6 cardiac catheter laboratories, a dedicated screening room within the Institute of Transplantation, 5 cardiothoracic theatres and our purpose-built Day Treatment Centre. We have recently installed 2 high spec Siemens Artis Icono systems to join our current Artis Q and Artis Q Zen biplane systems.
The cardiothoracic centre is a busy and diverse clinical area, providing a range of diagnostic and interventional studies such as angioplasty, pacing, EP, TAVI, and complex structural heart services.
The cardiac catheter team provides essential care to acute patients via a 24/7 PPCI service. The successful candidate will be expected to be a part of the emergency on-call team after a period of training has been completed. They will ideally have some experience in aspects of radiography such as plain film and intervention, experience with Siemens Artis fluoroscopy systems is advantageous. They will have opportunities for continuing professional development as well as development of clinical and teaching skills.
Duties and responsibilities will include:
- Undertaking a range of specialist cardiac cath lab procedures in line with department operational procedures and policies
- Working as part of a specialist multidisciplinary team committed to providing efficient and effective high-quality care, and participating in the on-call PPCI service
- Practice and promote good radiation safety, using ALARA principle to produce high quality diagnostic imaging with the lowest achievable dose.
- Develop clinical skills and participate in CPD activities and the education of others
Job Purpose
- To be part of a team delivering a high quality efficient and effective radiographic service, to make an informed decision on the diagnostic images required and demonstrate a professional, caring and responsible approach to patients.
- There is a commitment to out of hour’s work and “on call” and extended working day duties within the imaging departments primarily based at either the Freeman or RVI site but with commitments to work within Radiology departments Trust wide when required.

- Working knowledge of all relevant professional and NHS policies and procedures
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of radiation protection and methods of reducing radiation dose as well as a working knowledge of ionising radiation legislation (IR (ME) R).
