Job overview

Due to maternity leave within the department, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated Dietitian to join our friendly and pro-active Nutrition and Dietetics Service at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

We are a fully integrated team comprising 15 Dietitians, 3 Dietetic Assistant Practitioners, 3 specialist Nutrition Nurses and 3 Clerical Officers.

This fixed term temporary post offers an enthusiastic dietitian with an interest or previous experience in gastroenterology and surgery to develop their skills and knowledge and provide a high quality dietetic service.

As a department we will support your individual personal development with regular CPD sessions and training opportunities e.g. TPN training, relevant study days and clinical supervision. 

As well as supporting band 5 rotational dietitians, you will be actively involved in student training and we currently take students and support dietetic apprenticeships from Teesside University for their clinical placements.

Main duties of the job

·         To be responsible for providing a specialist Dietetic service to both the gastroenterology and surgery service based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead within the hospital and outpatient setting.

·         To act as a clinical specialist within the areas of gastroenterology and surgery; working within a multidisciplinary team including specialist nurses, consultants and other Allied Health Professions (AHP’s).

·         To be responsible for co-ordinating and developing these services within Gateshead.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidates’ clinical caseload will include covering our 29 bed gastroenterology ward, 30 bed surgical ward and gastroenterology specialist clinics. You will provide clinical expertise and advice to medical, nursing, other health professionals, service users and carers in a range of settings.

Planned and emergency surgeries for colorectal cancer, fundoplication’s, bowel perforation and obstruction are carried out within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and it benefits from a number of specialist nurses including Hepatology, IBD and Upper GI cancer with whom close working is encouraged, in addition to the medical and surgical teams. You will use your dietetic knowledge and expertise to provide appropriate dietary advice to service users, carers and staff relating to nutritional care.

Working within the MDT, you will promote the profile of dietetics and be the source of nutritional expertise, providing education and training for staff to ensure clinical effectiveness.

You will participate in audit, monitoring, evaluation and development of the dietetic services.

You will supervise junior members of staff, students and apprentices as required.

Qualification and Training

Essential criteria
  • Degree or post graduate diploma/Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Current HCPC Registration
Desirable criteria
  • PENG or other relevant master’s module
  • Member of BDA

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Good communication, time management and organisational skills.
  • Competent to manage nutritional support and enteral feeding regimes in adults.
  • Ability to work autonomously and show a problem solving approach.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Able to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent IT Skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Skilled in the dietetic management of parenteral nutrition.
  • Counselling skills.
  • Member of BDA specialist interest groups e.g. Gastroenterology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant post graduate clinical experience within gastroenterology and/ or surgical dietetics
  • Evidence of team working.
  • Experience of audit/data collection.
  • Experience of training and supervising student Dietitians
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in the delivering of FODMAPs
  • Experience of service development.
