Job overview

The advertised post is suitable for Resident Doctors who are interested in furthering their knowledge, skills and experience in Emergency Medicine (EM), whilst working in a stimulating yet supportive environment.  The post is for a fixed period of 12  months until August 2027.

The successful applicant will join the emergency department (ED) team working in the Emergency Care Centre opened in February 2015. The successful candidate will work on a full shift Resident doctor ED rota. 

The department sees approximately 110,000 new attendances per annum covering the full spectrum of acute illness and injury that is seen in a busy district general hospital.  This includes around 20,000 new paediatric attendances per year. The department is a designated trauma receiving unit and has established links with the local major trauma centre at the RVI in Newcastle.  The EM consultant body has several areas of specialist interest and specific training would be provided in; paediatric emergency medicine, core and enhanced emergency ultrasound, education and simulation.  The department runs a daily review clinic and a weekly paediatric review clinic.  The emergency department is responsible for the inpatient care of head and chest injuries.  There are established programmes of teaching, audit and research that the successful applicant would be encouraged to partake in.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to assess and manage patients presenting to the emergency department with a wide spectrum of emergency presentations. You will be involved in the resuscitation of acutely ill and injured patients and will be part of the trauma team. You will be expected to work closely with senior colleagues to facilitate good clinical care.

All the normal duties of the post are at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.  The resident doctor will accept that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances. Additional duties will be remunerated at a reasonable level.

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • ALS or Equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Studying towards FRCEM
  • Additional Degree or Equivalent
  • ATLS

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Completed Foundation Year 2 Level in the UK or Equivalent
  • Recent experience of providing services in an NHS setting
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Experience at CT/ST1 level in the UK or equivalent

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Meet the requirements of the GMC’s Good Medical Practice
