Job overview

The clinical laboratory team provides a High Quality Specialist Diagnostic Service to improve the Health Care of the people of South of Tyne and Wear.  The post holder will assist the department biomedical scientists to carry out the day to day technical activities of the Microbiology laboratory for the South of Tyne and Wear Pathology Services which provides pathology services for South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will assist the biomedical scientist  with the day to day analysis of patient samples, registration of samples and waste management. The post holder will also be responsible for running automated equipment within the laboratory.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

•     Maintain and promote the professional image of the SoTW Pathology Services and Gateshead Health NHS Trust.
•    Maintain patient confidentiality at all times in line with the Trust Information Management and Technology (IM&T) Information Security Policy.
•    Work in compliance with the Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures and Health and Safety Policies.
•    Follow good laboratory practice in line with professional guidelines and United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) standards.
•    Work within the Terms and Conditions of Employment of your Trust Contract.
•    Report incidents, accidents and defects according to Trust and Directorate guidelines.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE Grades A-C to include Mathematics and English and/or NVQ Level 2 or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
  • GCSE/O levels in Biology and Chemistry
  • NVQ2 in Clinical Laboratory Support

Experience

Desirable criteria
  • Previous laboratory experience.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to communicate effectively. Hand eye co-ordination and accuracy.
Desirable criteria
  • Computer keyboard skills
