Working for our organisation
QE Facilities (QEF) is a wholly owned subsidiary company of Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust (GHNT), based in the North East of England.
We provide a range of non- clinical services to GHNT and other NHS organisations. Our services include: estates, facilities services, procurement, medical engineering and devices, endoscopy decontamination and sterile services, transport, out-patient pharmacy, and prevention & management of violence & aggression training (PMVA).
In addition we provide consultancy services, advising clients on all aspects of establishing a subsidiary company within an NHS body to the provision of VAT compliance advice.
QE Facilities work to their own Terms and Conditions and these are not the same as Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Terms and Conditions. This is not an Agenda for Change Pay Rate.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

· Accountable to the supervisor and Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for the cost effective and efficient operation of all plant, services and equipment within his control, including the planning, monitoring and co-ordination of engineering maintenance programmes within the Estates department. · Mentor Apprentices, Maintenance Assistants and trainee staff. · Undertake engineering maintenance on a day-to-day basis, including dealing with operational incidents as and when they arise. Effectively diagnose engineering faults and initiate repairs. · Working to specifications and drawings for revenue and capital works carried out by contractor and direct labour. · Undertake and implement the programme of engineering maintenance, considering the operational requirements of the site. · Liaise with the wider Estates Management team to prepare engineering maintenance and plant replacement programmes on an annual basis. · Carry Minor New Works as requested by customer, to benefit wards and departments. · Assist the control of contractors on maintenance and minor capital projects as required. · Assist with investigations into engineering failures of plant, service, or equipment with reference to complaints and litigation issues including Health, Safety and Welfare at work, incident reporting and risk management . · Undertake training to maintain, including, but not limited to: -
o Decontamination o Medical Gas o Ventilation o Water o Lifts o HV/LV
· Co-operate with the wider team in updating annual maintenance plans. · Ensure the observance of policies and procedures for providing safe systems of work as required by the Health, Safety and Welfare Act, COSHH, Manual Handling, CDM Regulations, Codes of Practice etc. · Carry out engineering plant, services, and equipment condition surveys. · Support the Waste and Environment Manager in ensuring that the disposal of all engineering type waste such as scrap metals and equipment, e.g. waste electronic and electrical equipment (W.E.E.E.) is carried out in accordance with current regulation. · Carry out risk assessments for engineering related issues. · Work within engineering standards and quality control. · Advise line management on needs for plant replacement. · Liaise with the wider Estates Management team for advice on all professional matters concerning the Trust estate. · Identify and implement improvements to patient environment. · Liaise with Service Managers and Staff to ensure efficient delivery of the estates service. · Such other duties as may be determined by the Senior Estates Manager.

Person specification
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Essential criteria
- Must possess a sound understanding of electrical systems & infrastructures found in a hospital environment, along with the required maintenance and upkeep of the infrastructure and associated connected equipment
- Working knowledge of electrical systems within large complex properties.
- Comprehensive knowledge of electrical and mechanical plant and equipment including boilers and diesel engines.
- Mechanical competency
- Display a good knowledge of health and safety legislation and appreciation of potential hazards that could occur during the carrying out of maintenance work.
- Ability to plan work sequentially, measure for and take off materials.
- Ability to keep accurate records
Desirable criteria
- An excellent appreciation of all trades connected with both engineering and building services.
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Must have completed an appropriate Engineering Apprenticeship.
- Experience working in an NHS environment
- Multi-skilled electrical experience
- Significant post apprenticeship experience in an electrical discipline
- Knowledge of electrical management systems
Desirable criteria
- Sound knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering services found within a hospital environment
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- Successful completion of a recognised electrical bias apprenticeship
- NVQ Level 3 (electrical bias) or equivalent and relevant qualification
- Numeracy and Literacy to level 2
Desirable criteria
- HNC/Degree in Electrical Engineering or Building Services
- A recognised Health & safety Qualification
