Main duties of the job
-
the preparation, delivery and auditing of group-based pain management programme
-
the development, recording and monitoring outcome measures for group and 1:1 psychological interventions
-
triaging patients referred to the psychology pathway for suitability for short-term psychological work around pain management
-
the development, delivery and evaluation of in-service training for colleagues
-
service-based research projects as well as projects linked with Doctorate in Clinical Psychology courses at Teesside and Newcastle universities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- To support and enhance the professional psychological care of patients.
- Providing psychological assessment and psychological interventions under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist.
- To assist in clinical related administration, conduct of audits, data quality work, teaching and project work.
- This post involves working independently according to a work plan agreed with the line manager and within the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures.
Person specification
TRAINING & QUALIFICATIONS
Essential criteria
- Single honours degree (upper second class or higher) in psychology
Desirable criteria
- Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology
EXPERIENCE
Essential criteria
- Paid or voluntary experience of working as an Assistant Psychologist or alongside a Clinical Psychologist
- Computer literate with experience of using Microsoft Office and statistical packages for data analysis
- Experience of conducting literature searches and reviews
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with patient groups with psychological difficulties
- Experience of working with groups
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of developmental processes from childhood to old age
- Understanding the needs of individuals with psychological difficulties
- An ability to apply existing psychological knowledge and skills to a healthcare setting
- Understanding of issues relating to confidentiality
- High level communication skills (written and verbal) including an ability to communicate and work in settings in which the atmosphere may be highly emotive
Desirable criteria
- An understanding of the psychological needs of patients
- Presentation skills
- High level report writing
