North East Drive Mobility (NEDM) is a growing service and we are excited to invite applications from qualified registered healthcare professionals (OT/Physiotherapist), who are interested in the challenge of a role in a specialist clinical service.
Assessment of medical fitness to drive and passenger assessment are dynamic and evolving fields which require a commitment to professional excellence, a proven record of continued professional development, as well as an ambition to develop your career within a specialist rehabilitative service.
Part of Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear (CNTW) NHS Foundation Trust, NEDM is jointly funded by the Integrated Care Board and the Department for Transport. NEDM is part of the national coverage of Mobility Centres accredited by Driving Mobility*. Our main centre is based at Walkergate Park Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, with outreach services located in Cumbria and Teesside.
*Driving Mobility is the UK wide network of Mobility Centres providing assessment, advice and information on all aspects of personal mobility. Driving Mobility is the umbrella organisation for all Accredited Mobility Centres. It ensures that there are common standards, promotes good practice, offers training and education, and works closely with organisations such as the Department for Transport, the DVLA, Motability, police and varied healthcare professionals.
Main duties of the job
You will have an ability to communicate effectively with service users, health professionals and major stakeholders including DVLA, Motability and the police, as well as having a passion for developing services in line with service user and stakeholder needs.
You will be able to apply your clinical expertise to assess practical function during on-road assessment whilst accompanied by an Approved Driving Instructor, and ideally will have experience of working with a range of neurological and musculoskeletal conditions and will be able to deliver critical recommendations to service users related to their driving ability
Based at Walkergate Park Hospital in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and working flexibly between our outreach bases in Carlisle and Teesside once per week, this is an opportunity to become part of a busy, specialist clinical assessment team. You will also have the opportunity to train in powered wheelchair/mobility scooter and specialist child car seat assessments as part of your development.
An induction period is provided with ongoing workplace training to support your professional development in this specialist role. You will also be required to complete a mandatory Driving Mobility education pathway programme which will be fully funded as part of your role. (Note: in the attached job description this is described as the Oxford Brookes University course which is no longer in place and should be disregarded).
Car driver (full licence holder) is essential to the role.

Education and Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent in either Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or First Level Registered Nurse
- Relevant health care professional council registration
- Academic ability to study towards Masters level
- Audit experience with an ability take a lead role
- Evidence of continuing professional development/post registration education and training
Desirable criteria
- Experience of supervision and supporting the professional development of staff
- Working knowledge of research process
- Knowledge of services offered by external agencies relating to the speciality, eg DVLA, Motability and voluntary agencies such as AgeUK
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- A broad knowledge of disability, health conditions and impairments affecting physical, sensory, cognitive and emotional functioning.
- Working knowledge and application of IT skills in the areas of report writing, e-mail, data recording, internet research
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of adaptations and technology to assist passengers with disabilities
