Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time Advanced Speech and Language Therapist to join our service to provide input into the inpatients wards for working aged adults and older people service.  This is a 9-month fixed term post to cover maternity leave.  The base for this post is Newcastle working into St Nicholas Hospital and the Campus for Ageing and Vitality (CAV).

The team cover working age adults and older people wards across Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland working with patients who have complex cognitive and functional mental health difficulties.  

We are looking for a dedicated, enthusiastic individual.  You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and be confident in providing high quality, evidence based assessments and interventions and possess excellent communication and organisational skills as well as have the ability to work independently.

Main duties of the job

You will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams, clients, carers and other professionals to provide integrated support for communication and dysphagia issues providing assessment, treatment and rehabilitation as required.  You will support local teams in providing high-quality therapy input.

You will need to be confident in providing high quality, evidence-based assessments and interventions and have an understanding and experience of working with people with a range of complex communication needs and other disabilities within a variety of settings and environments.  

You will possess excellent communication and organisational skills and the ability to work independently.  There will be a requirement to share knowledge and skills specific to speech and language therapy to other members of the team including stakeholders.

We will provide you with a comprehensive induction period and you will have access to ongoing clinical supervision and appraisal with development reviews that will provide you with support and the specialist skills required to meet the holistic needs of the patients in your care.  You will be expected to actively engage in the Trusts supervision and continuing professional development process.

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Recognised SALT degree or equivalent and registered with HCPC
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses/CPD to Masters level equivalence
  • Post graduate level qualification relevant to area of specialism
Desirable criteria
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Attendance at a leadership course

Skills and Competencies

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills including negotiation and conflict management
  • Evidence of effective organisational skills
  • Expert supervision skills and experience to support others
  • Evidence of maintaining accurate and contemporaneous record keeping
  • Be able to travel between various locations within the trust
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate change management skills
  • Knowledge of RiO data systems and IT skills
  • Experience of conduction and evaluating clinical audit

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience and ability to work within MDTs
  • Advanced knowledge and skills in the management of service users within this clinical area
  • Commitment and experience of collaborative working in partnership both multi-agency and multi-disciplinary
  • Coordinating and supporting staff in the day to day provision of clinical services
  • Awareness of equal opportunities legislation and policies
  • Proven ability to manage a clinical caseload in a flexible manner as required
  • Experience of providing clinical supervision to clinical staff and undertaking appraisals
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements of the team
