Consultant in PICU
Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest and largest NHS hospital trusts in the country. We have around 16,000 staff and an annual budget of £1.7 billion.
With strong history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, research and innovation regionally, nationally and internationally, we’re in the top five providers of specialised health services in the country.
As well as providing a wide range of hospital and community services, we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.
We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, sex, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.
Newcastle Hospitals are proud to be one of the exemplar organisations across the NHS on sustainability, with a long history of delivering Sustainable Healthcare in Newcastle (Shine) and the first healthcare organisation in the world to declare a climate emergency. Our strategy includes commitments to being Net Zero by 2030, for our direct carbon footprint, and Net Zero by 2040 for our footprint plus. Delivering these ambitions will not be possible without the help, support and action of every single member of our team.
Job overview
We are delighted to offer an opportunity for an enthusiastic and well-motivated individual to join our team as a substantive Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care and Critical Care Transport at the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH). This will be based at the Great North Children’s Hospital, Royal Victoria infirmary site and at North East and Cumbria Transport And Retrieval (NECTAR) base, Campus for Ageing and Vitality Site, both in Newcastle upon Tyne.
GNCH Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is the lead centre for paediatric critical care for the Northern Region. We admit children referred for intensive care from an area extending from the West Coast of Cumbria, north through Northumberland to the Scottish Borders, and extending southwards to North Yorkshire. There are approximately 3500 intensive care bed days per year. Day to day care of children in the PICU is managed and led by the team of PICU consultants in consultation with subspecialties as appropriate. Paediatric cardiothoracic services are currently based at the Freeman Hospital with a separate PICU and ECMO beds based there with a separate clinical team. Co-location on the RVI site will be made a priority, enabling best possible care for children.
Main duties of the job
This purpose of this joint consultant post is twofold.
Working in a team of paediatric intensivists, the successful candidate will play an important role in the day-to-day running and wider development of a state-of-the-art PICU that operates as the paediatric critical care hub for the North East and North Cumbria region. The Great North Children’s Hospital also hosts a wide range of tertiary sub-specialities and a supra-regional immunodeficiency bone marrow transplant service that are all regular users of the PICU. Clinical duties will include consultant of the week and on call responsibilities.
In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to the day to the day running of the North East and Cumbria Transport and Retrieval paediatric service. The role will include both in hours and out of hours support for acute patient transport. This involves telephone triage and clinical support for referral for transport, liaison between the referring hospital and the acute services at GNCH as well as going out on retrieval.
There is the opportunity for the successful candidate to negotiate the time commitment to either of the services.
Working for our organisation
As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

- Freeman Hospital
- Newcastle Dental Hospital
- Cramlington Manor Walks
- Urgent treatment centres
- Newcastle Fertility Centre
- Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria

These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care (supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.
We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.
