Job overview

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and determined individual to work as a pharmacy technician within the Vaccine Team . The successful candidate will support the existing nursing team and pharmacy staff to deliver the Trust's vaccine programme to both staff and patients. In this novel role the successful candidate will be expected to provide pharmacy support to the team in addition to vaccine administration via Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and other legal mechanisms in a role amongst the first of its kind.  

Full training and mentorship will be provided from experienced staff working within the teams and senior pharmacy staff. 

The post holder will be expected to provide input on the department's clinical rota, weekend rota and covering accuracy checking slots. It is vital the post holder is able to work across inpatient clinical areas and within the Vaccine Team to compliment their development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide technical support on pharmaceutical matters, medicines management issues and medicines legislation within the trust-wide vaccination team on a routine basis, but also, whenever required, to other specialist areas e.g. ward/clinical setting, aseptics.

· The primary immunisation programme represents a key public health measure which contributes to the reduction of health inequalities and to the achievement of national and local health objectives.

· The post holder will support with improving the uptake rate and safe delivery of a large-scale vaccination programme within hospital,  community and educational settings contributing towards the public health agenda by improving health outcomes for staff and patients. They will work collaboratively with occupational health and wellbeing staff in supporting the delivery of vaccinations to patients, the public and staff.

· To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.

Person specification

Qualifications / Registration

Essential criteria
  • BTEC in pharmaceutical science or NVQ Level 3 supported by appropriate underpinning knowledge e.g. BTEC in Pharmaceutical Sciences, NPA or equivalent qualification.
  • Regional Qualification or equivalent for Medicines Management for Pharmacy Technicians. (If not already held there will be an expectation of achieving this when a training opportunity becomes available).
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Evidence of relevant specialist continuing professional development.
  • To have successfully completed an appropriate accredited technician checking qualification e.g. Regional Scheme, Buttercups. Regional Qualification for Medicines Management for Pharmacy Technicians (if not already held there will be an expectation to achieve this when a training opportunity becomes available).
  • A1 or equivalent NVQ assessor qualification (if not already held there will be an expectation to achieve this when a training opportunity becomes available).
  • Relevant evidence of CPD demonstrating that their knowledge and training are current and show evidence of revalidation if appropriate.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive relevant experience working in Pharmacy with post-qualification relevant experience in a hospital or primary care setting as a qualified/registered pharmacy technician.
  • Knowledge of the operation of Hospital Pharmacy Services.
  • The post holder will have experience of working at ward level or in a clinical setting, or primary care setting.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of delivering vaccinations within hospitals and community settings
