Job overview

An exciting opportunity exists for a dynamic, pro-active and highly motivated individual to join the Newcastle Hospitals breast care nursing team, as a band 6 Clinical Nurse Specialist. You will be joining a well-established and growing team of Breast Care Nurse Specialists who provide an excellent service to patients who have been diagnosed with early breast cancer who require a comprehensive programme of support throughout their diagnosis, treatment and beyond. 

We are looking for an  individual who is forward thinking, responsive to the needs of patients and the service and appreciate working within a multi-disciplinary team.

The successful applicant will have significant post registration experience with the ability to work autonomously and as part of the breast specialist team.

Main duties of the job

Main duties:

  • Coordinate the Patients journey through the Breast Care Service.
  • Acts as Key Worker for Breast Cancer patients.
  • Act as clinical supervisor to peers.
  • Provide specialist clinical advice/support/information to Patients, Carers, Relatives, Breast Care Core/Extended Team Members and staff/organisations associated to the speciality.
  • Enable patients with specialist breast care needs to attain their best possible quality of life and promote their cancer journey experience – acting as patient advocate when required.
  • Require enhanced communication skills to break bad news on a frequent basis and provide telephone counselling.
  • Drainage of Seroma.
  • Prescribe Permanent Breast Prosthetics.
  • Refer patients onto other Specialities as appropriate.
  • Act upon referrals from other members of the Multi Professional Health Care Team/Providers, Community Practitioners, GPs, Patients and Carers
  • Monitor the Cancer Targets for Breast Care.
  • Notify Primary Health Care Teams of Serious diagnosis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.
  • Within the sphere of specialist practice:
    •  Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice
    • Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
    • Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
    • Contributes to training and education within specialist area. 

The role will involve working across the organisation to provide Breast Care Services at the Freeman and Royal Victoria Infirmary as required.

Working with adult patients who have or fear that they may have breast cancer. These may be in-patients, out-patients and/or day care patients in the Speciality of Breast Care (or those referred for an opinion from other specialities). They may have substantial informational, emotional and personal needs.

This post involves giving and receiving highly complex and sensitive information.

 Flexibility is required as Clinic Workload and Patient Emotional Response   is unpredictable and patients may require rapid access to the breast care service.

National Targets/Standards in relation to Breast Cancer Care have a yearly review. This requires a yearly response from the Breast Care Team.

Involvement in the Cancer Network is expected in this role.
