Clinical Research is the scientific study of health and the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness. At Newcastle Hospitals, clinical research happens within most clinical specialities, wherever patients are seen and care for.

Clinical Research can make a real difference to health outcomes. Not only is it important for advancements in treatment, but it has been proven that patients cared for in a research-active organisation have better outcomes.

In an average year we recruit around 13,000 research participants into a broad range of research studies and trials. We’re proud of our world-leading reputation for research excellence and how we’re making a difference across our communities.

The set up and delivery of trials is supported by around 400 members of staff who are part of the Clinical Research Directorate. They all play an important part in helping to embed research into patient care.

We offer our staff unique learning opportunities that enable them to fulfil their role and maximise their potential.

Are you a registered adult nurse with significant clinical experience in Stroke?

Main duties of the job

This is a clinical patient facing post, which requires dynamic individuals who can work both individually and as part of a team.

You will be expected to work closely with the Stroke Consultants and Stroke Nurse Specialists in the delivery of research within the Stroke Unit. In doing so you will have the opportunity to acquire/develop clinical skills in acute research delivery and stroke identification and acute stroke management. The majority of patients are recruited withing the first few hours post stroke.

By identifying and supporting patients through their research participation the post holder will play a crucial role in the delivery of a broad portfolio of clinical trials.  Although we undertake research in all areas of stroke care and prevention our focus is on acute stroke interventions. The successful candidates must therefore be able to be flexible to meet the need of the service and be able to undertake some evening and weekend work, when required.

These posts are an opportunity to be part of a fully integrated stroke team, where Research Nurses and Nurse Specialists work alongside each other to achieve shared patient goals.

Working for our organisation

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.

Our staff oversee over 6,500 patient contacts every day, delivering high standards of healthcare from the following sites:

         Freeman Hospital

         Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI)

Health Innovation Neighbourhood (on the former Newcastle General Hospital and Centre for Ageing and Vitality site)

         Newcastle Dental Hospital

         Newcastle Fertility Centre

Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria

         Northern Genetics Service

         Cramlington Manor Walks

These include a range of flagship services which deliver cutting-edge care (supported by state-of-the-art diagnostic services in both radiology and pathology) and are a catalyst for innovation to support pioneering clinical practice in the NHS.

We also have offices at Regent Point in Gosforth and community sites.
